Whale watching from very small boats-east coast

Hi everyone,

I am very interested in knowing whether there is any place in NE or Boston region
where one can go on a whale watching cruse on a small boat. I mean really small
boat like zodiac or a bit bigger (10-20 people). Comfort, beverages , etc. are not of interest! As much as I looked for such experience, I could not identify any place that offers that.
BTW, I will be there from mid Sept- first week of Oct.

Thanks in advance for your help!!

The only whale watching I have done on the east coast - from Montauk - was a large boat (a couple of hundred people indoor/outdoor and 2 decks). The captain of that and other boats kept in radio contact - so when whales were spotted they could head to the site. But, we were nowhere near land.

Not sure how far into the north atlantic I would want to go with a zodiac - esp since a couple of the younger whales were playful - and kept bobbing up on different side of the boat. Would hate to be in the water so many miles from land.

I think the whales may not be so close to land as they are on the west coast.

The whale watching boats from Barnstable Harbor on the Cape aren't small either.

You will probably be getting to the end of the season in the northeast, but we did see lots of whales on a boat out of Provincetown in October. We went out to Stellwagan bank and the boat was not small as you seem to want, but I would not want to be that far out in that small a boat. I have seen whales from shore on both sides of the Cape earlier in the season.

I think there might be whale watches out of Nova Scotia on zodiacs, such as this one http://www.capebretonwhaletours.com/

I think NYTraveller is correct, whales in New England are too far out in the Atlantic for it to be safe to take tourists on zodiacs. Even smaller boats aren't the best idea.

emalloy is likely speaking of the Right Whales that continue in celebrated rescue numbers to visit close to the shore in early spring. Those whales are long gone until next year. It is my understanding that whalewatching in late september is pretty far out. The outfitters in Provincetown all work together in a scientific effort on larger boats.

We've also seen humpbacks from the observation deck at Provincelands.

Sadly a dead humpback washed ashore about 100 yards from my Connecticut summer home in July. That was a bit closer than one would choose to be under the circumstances.
