Whale watching

Where is whale watching better- Monterey or San Diego during this next 2 weeks?

Backgroundlanning on doing the pch1 from sf to Sd with several stops- 2 nights sf, 1 Monterey, 1 San Luis obispo, 1 Santa Barbara. Then spending a few days in Sd.

If needed I can give more details of the trip

Thanks for the help

This is Blue and Humpback season - I'd think the best viewing at this time of year would be out of Monterey (and maybe Santa Barbara) but there are whale watching trips all up and down the coast.

There has been some incredible humpback activity in Monterey Bay this season.

No grey whales off the SoCal coast at this time of year, but probably some humpbacks and blues.

We drove up the coast to Carmel 2 weeks ago, and we could see huge pods including humpbacks. Take binoculars!

Although it was quiet at the elephant seal rookery when we stopped there 2 weeks ago, you should make a quick stop just for a look.

We went about a month ago or so out of Dana Point - no whales to be seen but wonderful weather, great day on the water and lots of pods of common dolphins - super fun to watch. there is usually a whale sighting tracker on the actual companies to give you an idea something like this:

http://www.dolphinsafari.com/?gclid=...q2jxoCZ2jw_wcB

You can see in the middle of the page Whale Watching sightings - looks like down here in Orange County area they have seen about 25 whales total in the last week - seems hit or miss on any given day.

Here's a page where you can follow sightings for the Monterey Bay area https://www.facebook.com/pages/Monte...70012223096521

There was an orca mom and calf right in Carmel Bay yesterday!

Book early if you plan to go out on a boat as most of the trips have been going out full, often with waitlists.
