WestInn Times Sq. eating and transport options please

We arrive in NYC on the 8th September. Getting very excited!

Staying at the WestInn Times Square for 5 nights. We would like some breakfast suggestions nearby and also dinner suggestions. Our first time in NYC so it is all new. Have done lots of reading and research about what to see and do but not so much on the food side of things.

Also hope to be able to use the subway, which is the closest station?
Thanking you for any suggestions.

I believe you mean the Westin NY Times Square Hotel at 200 West 43rd St which is just off 8th Av.

There are several subway lines in the area. Which train you take will depend on where you want to go.

The 8th Av line (A, C, & E trains) at W42nd St & 8th Av

The Broadway line (N, Q & R trains), the 7th Av line (1, 2, & 3 trains, the Flushing line (7 train) and the 42nd St Shuttle to Grand Central (S train) at W42nd St & 7th Av/Broadway.

Check a subway map for specific trains to/from destinations. You can get one for free at any manned booth near the turnstiles in the subway. You can see the online version at http://www.mta.info/maps or download an App at http://www.mta.info/apps/

Also please be aware that during the day and on weekends there is a lot of repairs/construction work being done on various subway lines. This may result in some stations being closed or some train routes being re-routed along other lines. See posters in stations and station entrances for more details. You can also check: http://web.mta.info/service/ (on that page change the date as necessary)

Check out hopstop.com. Just put in any two addresses in NYC and it will show you exactly how/time to get there via subway, bus, foot or cab. You are on top of all of the major subway lines including the crosstown S shuttle to the east side, which would hook you up with the Lex Ave trains - the 4, 5 and 6 that go up and downtown on the east side (the other trains are west side).

Sorry - for eating can you tell us:

what types of food you like/dislike

your budget for lunch or dinner (and if this is just for entree or a whole meal including beverage, tax and tip)

There are a ton of modest ethnic restaurants of many varieties on 9th ave in the 40s - check out menupages.com for prices and menus (although reviews are often odd).

There are many local dives that will have inexpensive breakfasts and breakfast specials. If you want something more formal and expensive that is another matter.

Thank you for your replies and suggestions.

Yes the hotel is the Westin New York Times Square. Sounds like we will be in a good location for the subway.

I will try to pick up a subway map. I do like a paper map.

I like the hotstop link, thank you

As for food, Breakfast, Aussies love their cereals, some muesli or granola, yogurt and fresh fruit. Not so much the big cooked breakfasts.

As for dinners, we like all types of foods. Very fond of Italian or ethnic foods. Usually entree (we call this main) and dessert and some wine. Not fine dining but a nice meal. Thank you for the suggestion of checking out 9th Ave.

The subway system in Manhattan is quite extensive, no matter where you stay. They were all once private lines which explains the overlap. You will probably wind up taking the Number 7 train or the Times Square/Grand Central shuttle to get over to the East Side.

Here is an electronic subway map.

http://web.mta.info/maps/submap.html

What that maps does not show is the new extension of the Number 7 line that is SUPPOSED to open on Sept 13. The opening has been delayed for more than two years, so double check when you come.

New Yorkers don't typically do large cooked breakfasts - only for brunch on weekends. Much more likely to do a coffee and bagel or egg sandwich on the run. Any deli (with seats versus take out only) or diner should be able to provide cereal/granola and yogurt - possibly with some fruit.

Aussie I found the food in NYC very reasonably priced. 3 yrs ago we could get a cooked breakie, juice and coffee for $9.99. Way better value than home.

There are so many restaurants, cafes etc that you wont have trouble finding something. Don't worry at all.

Have a look in and see if it looks like locals eating or tourists. If its locals chances are its good food/value.

We found we walked nearly everywhere. We got a 7 day subway ticket from vending machine at station. Its too much fun to be walking the streets so if its walkable do it. There is a feel you wont find anywhere else. It was amazing.

I've almost lost track of the different hotels I've stayed in, in NYC. However, my mother and I once stayed in the Westin, and we loved it.

We had a nice big room with great beds and a very good shower.

Have a wonderful time.
