Has anyone traveled from West Yellowstone south on 20 then on 32, 33 to Jackson and GTNP? Is it pretty? How long a drive is it? We are staying in Jackson after WY and want to go in this way so we are not doing so much backtracking. We will be headed north to Gardiner after staying in Jackson. It's just the two of us empty nesters taking a vacation after our daughter's wedding. We leave next week.

New York, New York...my kind of town

We actually did do that route a couple of years ago. We left Canyon in the AM, went around the southern loop by Old Faithful, then out the west entrance through West Yellowstone. We ended up at Signal Mountain Lodge way before dark, but I don't really know how long it took because we stopped many, many times along the way.
We stopped at Mesa Falls and then drove into the Bechler region of Yellowstone to Cave Falls. I have Janet Chapple's "Yellowstone Treasures" (which is a fantastic book -- I got it at the library first to see if I liked it, and then bought it), and there is a chapter on this route. You can also take a side excursion to Big Springs. We wanted to go a different way also because we had already been up and down the south entrance many times. The Tetons look very different from the Idaho side. We were glad we went that way if you have the time to stop at the different areas (at least Mesa Falls). I can't say that the whole way is beautiful scenery, but it is an easy drive and gives you a different perspective of the land out there and driving over Teton Pass is beautiful.
We live in the area. From West Yellowstone to Jackson is about 2 1/2 hours. Starting out with high Cauldra flat area then drop down to farming area and then up over the Tetons into Jackson. If I were you I would take the side road to Mesa Falls, stop and look, and then on to Ashton. Take the back road (don't remember the number but it goes through Lamont and ends up in Tetonia) then down to Victor and go over the pass. Cresting the pass is probably one of the MOST spectacular views you will see in your live. It takes my breath away every time I go over!!!
