Weekend getatway within 4 hours of NJ

I know there are a lot of topics on getaways and I have read through most of them but would still like to post this question.

Husband and I would like to getaway mid August for our anniversary without the kids. We live in central NJ and would like a place that is no more than 4 or 5 hours away. Closer to home would be better but we are willing to go up to 5 hours away

We have been to Bucks County / Lambertsville many times as day trips and really not interested in doing a weekend there.

What we are looking for is somewhere romantic maybe on the water either ocean, river or lake. We aren't into hiking and such but love charming towns that we can walk around. We are both foodies.

We have never been away on our own since the kids have been born except to Atlantic city overnight, which I do not consider a romantic getaway.

Any and all suggestions would be welcomed.
Thank you

I got married in Newport - its one of my favorite places around and I love to travel. There is SO much to do in Newport! Definitely go there. 200 people came for our wedding from NJ, NY and Boston and everyone is still talking about it. Amongst the many activities - beach, famous ocean cliff walk, touring the mansions, tennis hall of fame, sailboat rides from Bowen's wharf, lobster rolls and clam chowder on bowen's wharf, people watching, live music, etc.

I also live in Central Jersey and my husband and I are going to Cape Cod for a long weekend. We're staying in Sandwich at the Dan'l Webster Inn. It looks very romantic! Have you ever been to Salem, MA? We had a great time there. Very walkable.

there is always the marriot or the hyatt - those i think are pricey in newport compared to other hotels. the hyatt just underwent major major renovations - its on goat island but thats only like a 10 minute nice walk into town and i think they have a shuttle too. the newport harbor hotel and inn is not fancy at all but is in the BEST location - right in the middle of bowens wharf. there are a town of bed and breakfasts if that is your thing. someone told me about the Pelham Court Hotel which is small and new and i heard great. good luck.
