Dressing in "layers" is the key, Shirley. We have been to San Francisco five times(one of our favorite cities!), and each time we've needed jackets or sweaters and jeans/long pants. However, there were afternoons that became so bright and sunny that we were comfortable in short sleeves.
Specifically, if you plan on touring Alcatraz, (and you really should!) dress extra warmly, and the same goes for taking in a Giants game at their new Pac-Bell Stadium.
BTW, do a search here under San Fancisco and you will find an abundance of helpful information. Those who post here from that area are among the best! Have a great trip!

Trying to explain SF weather........not easy! Every day the fog rolls in at some point in the late afternoon and then rolls out again sometime in the morning. Depending on how early it comes in and how late it departs and how dense it is, the temperatures will vary. On very rare instances there is almost no fog and then the temps can get very hot. Normally in August, you would expect around 75-80 during the midday and 50-55 at night, but it really depends on the "fog gods". As you go inland from SF or down the Peninsula to San Jose, the fog has less of an effect so it gets warmer during the day. The closer you are to the water (Alcatraz, Pac Bell Park etc.) the cooler you can expect it to be. Layers are essential but you can almost count on no rain in August.

Hi Shirley,
If there are going to be any warm - maybe hot by Scottish standards - days in mid-summer in SF, you'll be hitting the most likely ones. But the fog is always lurking, like the others say.
I do remember a July headline from long ago in Edinburgh, though: "Sizzling Seventies Continue - No Relief in Sight."
So it's all a matter of what one is used to.

Sally, I VIVIDLY remember Candlestick! On a "lovely" July 4th a few years ago, we attended a night game in our shorts and sweatshirts - AND the hotel blankets pulled off our beds! We were FREEZING! But the post-game fireworks and music were awesome. Our night game at the beautiful Pac-Bell wasn't that much warmer, although this time we knew how to dress!

Shirley, Ahhhh...The 'Stick...I remember the Giants giving out "Crois de Candlestick" medals to people who would stay to the end of and extra inning night game.
We were in SF last Novemebr for Thanksgiving/anniversary weekend.
We walked from The St. Francis at Union Square down to the Carnelian Room which is at the top of the Bank of America Bldg and worked up a good sweat even though it was around 7:30 at night.!
We seldom wore sweaters/jackets the next 4 days. Beautiful, long weekend!
We're in the Sacramento area and it's in the low 100s (degrees-F)today and thru this weekend! Maybe we'll go to SF this weekend?!?!
