Thanks for that information. We're staying at the Residence Inn Marriott near Alamo Plaza. It's not far from the hotel where the conference is happening, but we were able to get a suite for a good price. I am travelling with my family (young kid) and we needed a kitchenette and separate bedroom for a whole week, which wasn't available at the conference hotel. There may be hotels slightly closer but this one seems OK. Looking forward to getting to know San Antonio . I've been to the US before but this is my husband and daughter's first trip there.

Thanks volcanogirl! Sounds perfect - similar to temps we have here right now although I am afraid I think in celsius and not fahrenheit! We are just turning from summer to autumn here (Sydney, Australia) - OK with long sleeves / light sweater, although we are a bit rainy (actually a lot rainy but that's a little atypical), but still temperate. When it's sunny it's beautiful and gentle weather.

The River Walk is on our to-do list!

If you see a place called Boudro's, they have good guacamole and prickly pear margaritas. There's also a boat/barge tour of the river that's fun to take. Your daughter would probably have fun going to Sea World - not sure if that interests you, but kids love it. And the Alamo if you're into historical sites. Have fun!

We have a home in San Antonio, and although I'm not there right now, it has been a very warm winter and will most likely be a very warm spring too. Our neighbor tells us our grass needs mowing and the leaves are beginning to come out on the trees. If you are lucky, perhaps the bluebonnets as well as other Hill Country wild flowers will be beginning to bloom toward the end of your stay.

Alamo Plaza is convenient to everything downtown. You can walk through the bottom level of the Hyatt Regency (just off Alamo Plaza but visible from it) to get to the Riverwalk. Hopefully you'll have time to see some of the sights. I absolutely love the King William historic district with its beautifully restored homes and there is a terrific restaurant down there open only for breakfast and lunch--the Guenther House.

There are a lot of "not-so-hot" restaurants on the Riverwalk, but Boudros that Volcanogirl mentioned is terrific. We also love Rosario's, which, although not on the Riverwalk, is not far-- five minute or so drive from where you are staying. You might also try one of the Tex-Mex restaurants in El Mercado--Mi Tierra or La Margarita, and El Mercado is a fun way to get a taste of the Hispanic side of San Antonio. The population, by the way, is more than 50% Hispanic and you won't be there long before hearing the rapid-fire cadence of their language.

Suggestion- before you visit the Alamo, see the movie at the IMAX (located in the Rivercenter Mall next door to Alamo). It will help to set the stage.

Restaurants - Biga on the Banks, Bohanan's (Houston St), Paesanos, The Palm, Las Canarias (La Mansion Hotel). Rio Rio Cantina or Casa Rio for Mexican on the River Walk (not San Antonio's best but decent). Mi Tierra's or La Margarita at El Mercado.

Lavandula needs to check and double check prices at Biga, Bohanan's, the Palm, and Las Canarias before going there for dinner, especially so seeing as they are traveling with a child!!!! All are good, but quite expensive for the average tourist. I was going to suggest Pesca too, but decided against it because of the cost.

Rio Rio and Casa Rio "not San Antonio's best"....

Oh wow, this is great information! So looking forward to some restaurants in San Antonio. Have just sent my husband the link and we will go through these. I am anticipating mostly lunches out though as we are with a three-year old and we won't be doing babysitters (also have self-catering accommodation). And - you might think this strange - but I love supermarkets in other countries. So looking forward to doing a shop with new and interesting ingredients. While I'm with that thought - is there anything foodwise that is local and interesting to take back home with us? Our quarantine service does not allow fresh food (fruit, veg, meat) but would probably allow spices or packet mixes if we declare them in advance. And - are there any supermarkets (big or small) near our hotel, if you know of them?

There aren't any large supermarkets downtown, but you must - MUST- go to Central Market. It is just 4 miles north of downtown, on Broadway in Alamo Heights, It is the best EVER, and I've shopped all over the world. Next to the Alamo and River Walk, it is the place I take all our visiting friends to experience. Fortunately, we live about 4 blocks away, so I shop there every day. Www.centralmarket.com. Another thing you will like ... The Pearl, SA newest venue. It is an old brewery that is being redeveloped. On Saturdays, there is a farmers market. The Culinary Institute of America just opened its 3rd campus there - big, big deal. Top Chef Texas was filmed in part there. There is a great store that specializes in Latin American stuff - Melissa Guerra's Tienda de la Cocina - not a grocery store, more of a kitchen store. There are awesome restaurants there, too - La Gloria for real Mexican food, not expensive, on the River. The Pearl is also off Broadway, just 2 miles north of downtown. You could probably take a river taxi there. Www.atpearl.com. It is very cool!

Weather advise...Day before you are leaving--check long range weather report on weatherunderground.com just in case there are unseasonal changes...few years ago we visited in early Feb. took mostly "light clothes' . Hit a cold spell--freezing--30 degree temps for 3 days--black ice on freeway bridges--thank goodness we were not driving.
You can always add jacket and scarf at last6 minute.
