We want too see Statue of liberty. Flying into EWR and out of Jfk

Im actually traveling to buffalo for a family reunion, which is 2pm on Saturday July 22. Flights to NEWARK EWR were more reasonable. Our flight gets in Friday July 21 around 6am,originating on West coast, THURSDAY at 10pm Pacific time, NON STOP. We fly out of JFK SATURDAYthe day of the family reunion, leaving at 6AM TERMINAL 5. My son is 10 and asked about the statue of liberty. At first I told him no that it was too far, just like I was told when I asked about it at his age. When I found cheaper flights and remembered I was the one that used to ask that question and now that I'm the one in charge, we will both get to see it. We're traveling with my boyfriend. What I've found so far is that if we take the Staten island ferry, it will take us right by it. We don't need to go right to it and have to keep in mind the reason of our trip it's the family reunion. I'm planning on finding a hotel close to JFK. Please help me Make the most of this trip.

Going to Statue of Liberty from Liberty Park in NJ is actually better than from NYC. There is ample parking and it is closer to the Statue/ I have taken my daughter and it is wonderful. Staten Island ferry does not get close enough. You can book reserved timed tickets to the pedestal where they have a nice interior museum where you can see replicas of the hand and torch. Included in the ticket is a visit to Ellis Island which is a great history introduction to your son about immigration in the 20th Century. I hope that you go. Here is the link:

P.S.: I hope that you have time during the reunion to go to Cave of the Winds. I just went with my family for the first time at night and it is magical.

What I am reading is that you are arriving in Newark at 6am Friday and leaving from JFK at 6am Saturday to Buffalo...

First of all, you may be very tired after flying all night... second, what will you do with your baggage? To check in at a hotel at JFK, you would have to transport from Newark to JFK, arrange to leave your bags there, then head for either New Jersey or the Manhattan Ferry docks... then back to JFK to sleep til 4am to make your flight to Buffalo at 6am...

Is that the plan?

If you don't plan to actually go to Liberty Island or visit the Ellis Island museum, you have more than enough time to go straight from EWR to your JFK-area hotel and return to Manhattan for the day, and then you can see quite a bit more than the Statue.

In my opinion, the Staten Island ferry does indeed get you close enough for a decent look at the statue (almost as close as the ferry to the Statue). I've done this multiple times with family who are in town but don't want to devote a half-day to visiting, but it's just not the same experience as actually going.

You can look on the Statue Cruises web site to see if tickets are still available for your day (they book up far in advance on summer weekends). It's likely you'll be able to visit but won't be able to go to the Crown. But the luggage issue is a real one. You can't take bags to the Statue, so if you want to go you really do have to trek out to your hotel first and check in. Though you can easily take your bags onto the Staten Island ferry, and then you can get a car service or Uber to pick you up at the Staten Island ferry terminal and take you directly to your JFK-area hotel, or you can return to Manhattan and take the subway to the Airtrain for a fraction of the cost.

I thought the Staten Island ferry was an excellent way to see the statue.

@Belle - I doubt the OP will have a car.

Garyt22... My plan was not to check in to the hotel and then go back no... And you're right, we probably will be tired. And you're right... We WILL have luggage...i was hoping to just be able to get to jfk by way of Staten island ferry. Then, I'm sure we aren't able to check into the hotel by JFK until 3... But will want/NEED to by then... Take a bit of a nap/freshen up some... Then maybe go out at night a little. What I don't want is us to be so exhausted that we won't enjoy the reunion... So,i guess what I need to know is how to get from EWR to the Staten island ferry... Then from there get off(where). I'd definitely want to find a hotel very close to JFK.i don't want a lot of hassle in the am. I'm not a morning person. Thanks. This is helping to be able to talk with someone who knows.... I've always heard when I tell people that my family is in New York and then I tell them it's buffalo, They respond with... Well that's not really new York. But that's all I know. I want to see what everyone is talking about.... Also,i don't have my plans yet for my return flight.i can always come back to the area and I won't be so crunched for time... Like Monday.

Unless you are traveling light, or taking a taxi, I would head for the JFK area hotel and dump the luggage. The hotel will hold it for you, and it is an easier trip to the Staten Island ferry by public transport from JFK than Newark. Take the shuttle from Newark to JFK.

Even with a JFK hotel you will have to get up early to make a 6:00 am flight!

For transport options see rome2rio.com, maps.google.com and https://www.panynj.gov/airports/ewr-...portation.html

Cave of the Winds is arguably the best attraction in Niagara Falls, NY. I only mentioned that since the family reunion is in Buffalo. My husband grew up in Buffalo and went to Niagara Falls about once a month.

I remember going as a kid and seeing them put the lights on. That has been a good memory.

Now I'm thinking about staying in Manhattan at the Roosevelt hotel. Is this feasible?

If you want to enter Canada to view the Falls from that side, yes you do need a passport:

Cave of the Winds is on the New York side and is the best attraction at Niagara Falls. I have taken the Maid of the Mist on the NY and Canada side, and the NY Maid of the Mist is far superior because it goes by the American Falls which you can see. When the Maid of the Mist gets to the Horseshoe Falls, it is too misty to see. Maid of the Mist NY side offers a staircase next to Niagara Falls that the Canadian side cannot do. Top of the Falls (NY) has stunning view of Horseshoe Falls. So, if you don't have passports, the Falls are still worth a visit.
