I know it is close but I would entertain the idea of spending a few days in Hocking Hills. A great place to relax, do some hiking & did I mention relax ? There are some posts on here you may find helpful I'll top.
Thank you for your reply, we love that area and just went for a weekend last month!
I grew up about 15 minutes from there & lived in Columbus as well. (I used to skip school @ the Caves) The only other places I can think of would be Pittsburg or Deep Creek Lake State Park (the name may be not quite accurate) which I believe is between Morgantown & Cumberland.
Hi mhicks
If you enjoy history and have not been to Gettysburg, let me recommend it! Harper's Ferry is near and good to combine with Gettysburg. Also if you've not been to Independence Square in Philadelphia and the Liberty Bell, that is great history. Then, of course, there is Washington DC
Pittsburgh could be fun. There is Kennywood Amusement park, home to some of the worlds best roller coasters; and you could see a Pirates game, and go up the incline for views, and visit the Carnegie museums. In summer you can almost always find a neighborhood festival somewhere in Phg (on a weekend), and enjoy the music and ethnic food.
Other possibilities: Fort Necessity Natl' Battlefield, Ohiopyle (waterslides in the river, white water rafting), and FallingWater (Frank Loyd Wright house). But these wouldn't add up to a few day's stay, IMHO. Maybe a pleasant stop on the way to somewhere else.
Beg to differ with CapXXX. Haven't looked at a map, but a thought is Ohiopyle, PA in the Laurel Moutain Highlands. The resorts, Nemacolin or Seven Springs would be great places to stay. There is terrific white water rafting in the area as well as close proximty to Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater & Kentucky Knob design homes. There is a Revolutionary War Battlefield nearby as well. Plenty to keep a family busy for several days. The scenery is lovely. We found a terrific bargain a couple of years ago at Seven Springs, as summer is off season for them. Each resort has lovely swimming, horse riding, go-cart racing and concert facilities.
From Cumberland, you are close enough to Washington that you could spend a few days on the Mall. Air & Space and Natural History are interesting to even 6 year olds. DC is a great family visit.
