I'm headed to VT for the first time in a couple weeks. One thing we had to scrap due to our timing and itinerary was Ausable Chasm - its in upstate NY near VT... maybe worth a look to see if it's on your way?

As suggested you could take in the ferry from Burlington and visit Ausable Caverns or a bit farther south Howe Caverns.

Also south in NY for the History lovers, there is Fort Ticonderoga and Sarasota National Battlefield, as well as FDR home/library and Eleanor Roosevelt home in Hyde Park.

Our son and his family did a 3 week cross country trip. DIL googled playgrounds and parks along their route to give the kids a break from the long drive. They found some terrific playgrounds.

How long do you have and what are your interests? There is a lot of nature & history in that area.

& when are you traveling?

Saratoga could be an ok place to stop for all or part of a day. It is directly on the Northway (I87). Now through Labor day is horse racing season which means that hotel rooms are $$$$. You'd need to drive further south to Albany to get a normal priced room, as everything north of the Erie Canal up to Lake George will be peak season rates.

I would not consider Saratoga battlefield an interesting place to visit with a 3 & 7yr old. Older kids who are learning about that era, perpaps. If parents are very into that era history you could do the 10mi driving loop through the park with about a dozen stops of interest at the various US & British encampments, redoubts, battle sights.

In Saratoga you have the horse track, with racing every day except Tue. In the mornings, from about 730 to 11am you can watch the horses train on the practice track across the street from the main track.

In Spa park there are numerous mineral water springs (as a kid we used to call it "Fishy Water". Plus several good playgrounds, and a state park pool with waterslide ($2 admission for the day).

You could check out some locks on either the Erie or Champlain Canal. You can see the original 1820's era canal/locks in Waterford, or the early 1900's version along either canal. There's not a lot of boat traffic at present so you may not see them actually operate the locks. They run on-demand.

Lake George is another option. There are a few small, uncrowded beach parks that are perfect for a few hrs. One on the west side of the lake in Bolton Landing - I forget the name, but it's near the Sagamore. You could also check out Lake George village - with mini golf, ice cream, tourist traps, and paddle wheel boats.

Lots to do in that area - let me know if you have specific interests.

Thank you guys, we have covered Saratoga springs, Bolton landing and lake George couple of times,
We are leaving this weekend for new hempshire and Vermont,
Initially we planned on leaving Thursday night but hubby thought we should explore more and add Friday as well, so was thinking If we could add one more day ....what could we do ?

Ausable chasm looks really interesting but I am not sure we could be able to do much activities considering my kids age

Woodstock is a very pretty tourist town with shops. DH enjoyed the Billings Farm Museum but I did not go on that trip. Just north is Quechee Gorge and just a bit further north is Norwich which has the Montshire Museum. Our granddaughters had a great time there. We took a picnic lunch although you could also do lunch at the King Arthur Flour café and then had the girls change into bathing suits for the outdoor water play.

As you go south from Burlington, in Bristol there's a route (Lincoln Gap?) that goes over the mountains to Rt 100. Heading east just outside of town there is a local swimming hole with a natural waterfall. You would have to check conditions and safety for young children. When we visited the water level was so low in one section you could walk across but there are a lot of rocks so water shoes (not flip flops) are recommended. We picnicked and watched the brave older kids and adults jumping into the deep pool at the waterfall end. You can google to find other swimming holes in VT, some might be safer. There's some photos of some that look great for young kids. Just be safe to check safety factors. There's been a lot of rain so some places might have higher water levels than usual. Last year was a drought so very different.

There are tons of places to stop along the way! Most are in the Adirondacks which have a ton of free sight seeing in the mountains as well as parks and hiking trails.

Lake Placid would be a great place to stop.
Not only does it have cute shops for all ages and GREAT restaurants a big attraction is the Olympic Training Grounds.

Old Forge is another great stop
In the summer Old Forge is ROCKING and is a super popular destination. Anyone who has ever been to Old Forge can tell you all about the Pied Piper a great Ice Cream stop, the General Store which is just full of great unique items, the KOA which offers a fun glamping experience for the kiddos, and of course Enchanted Forest Water Safari a super awesome water park right in the heart of Old Forge.

Lake George is probably one of the biggest tourist attractions in the Adirondacks and that would be because it is a quaint little town which has very unique shops, access to a beach, and a great park. Lake George also has boat rentals hourly/daily/weekly which would be great for the kids.

All along the Hudson you will find great small towns and some local natural attractions. One thing is for sure NYs state parks are not lacking. Another note is that New Yorkers do love their waterfalls so you can check to see if any are along your route.

A little out of a direct route though in Upstate NY there is an awesome summer getaway in the Thousand Islands along the finger lakes depending on how much time you have to spend. I suggest Alexandria Bay.
