WaterFire until midnight

My husband and I have plans to be in Providence this Saturday night for the WaterFire which I have always wanted to do. Well, the Celtics lost game 6 and therefore game 7 is Saturday night. My husband is a die hard fan and unfortunately hotels don't have DVR.

My question is do the fires stay lit until midnight like the website says? We could go to the fires maybe for a half hour right at the beginning and then go back out after the game is over. Thanks.

We went back for my niece's graduation from Brown about 8? years ago and loved the Water Fire. Just a treat as is walking along the river beforehand, the whole anticipation, etc.

If you stay close enough to the river - you could probably see when they light the fires - and while some may accuse me of turn coating - tell your husband: Hey - in the NBA - only the last two minutes really matter.

And if you want a great place to dine - check out New Rivers - which my wife's cousin started, along with her husband.

What a lousy game! Mr_Glass was there in waaaaaay overpriced seats.

Love Waterfire! Which hotel are you staying at? Make a deal with him. If you win a carnation then he can go back to the hotel for the second 'inning' while you stroll and bring him back some street food.

"Pierrot (Pedrolino) from the Commedia del’arte, in his naive and everlasting quest to win the heart of a beautiful girl. He will be making his way up and down the river tossing visitors complimentary carnations which reflect the connection between life and art!"

From the ones I have attended, it starts dramatic with an always interesting classical dramatic lighting ceremony and then as the hours go by the music modernizes.

If things go as poorly as tonight, tell him he is jinxing the game and needs to go out and smell the fires!

Amusing response Looking_Glass; I think he is going to want to smell the fires or the flowers but after the game. I do think hotels should have dvr technology!

We are staying at the Marriott Renaissance Downtown on Avenue of the Arts. I am not sure how close it is to the river.

So, are the fires and things still going on 11:30- midnight?

Allright LeBron: Turn up the Heat again and beat those aging Celtics. Can't stand center Kevin Garnett - although he is a good player.

Was a huge Celtic fan back in the days of Bill Russell - but when Larry Bird was holding court - liked the LA Lakers/Showtime, although San Diego's Bill Walton did give the Celts a big boost in one playoff game.

Now - want to see LeBron and Duane Wade play those even younger guns from OKC, who have the 2nd best player in the NBA with Durant.

Should be a marvelous finals.

Uno Mas - check out New Rivers if you can. The current owner/long time chef bought it from the founders (my wife's cousin - may she RIP and her husband Bruce) but I think he is continuing the grand tradition. http://www.newriversrestaurant.com/about-new-rivers/

We went to WaterFire last summer. YES, the fires stay lit - there are refueling boats that re-load the pits with new wood. The night we went it was piped music, and the music stays on as well. Enjoy!

Wow. This bugs me and it's none of my business.

Taking a trip to see something, then largely missing it to watch televised sports...

As I said, none of my business, but it makes my head hurt.

Oh I hope you enjoy the Renaissance. It is a fantastic location for Waterfire. I had an issue on my first stay there, and they immediately comped me. Took my fam there last year for water fire and they were great. It's a perfect location. Valet your car, because Providence has some very strange parking on the street overnight laws and you will be ticketed. It's the nature of the city. I think by 11:30 the fires will still be going, but they will have stopped feeding them and things will be winding down. And the music will likely be more contemporary.

I am sure you will be able to reach a compromise and take a short stroll together and then let him get back to the game and then stroll after the Celtics win!

The weather looks good. Maybe we'll head there tomorrow too!

Be sure to have a nice nightcap ready for your dear husband - to help him recover after the Celts get flattened by the Miami Heat.

BTW - being a real sports fan - I can understand his wanting to see the game - in one fashion or another. Heck - he could probably listen to it on a radio or even watch it on a laptop if you can get wi-fi by the river.

I thought I would follow up with you to let you know what we decided. Got to Newport and spent the night. In the morning we got up to a beautiful morning and we decided to cancel our reservation for the Renaissance in Providence. It felt like we would be doing what we do all week along which is pushing and running. We would save Water Fire for another trip just to Providence and enjoy what Newport had to offer in a relaxed pace since we have never been there before. And yes, we were back in the room after a lovely dinner to see the Celtics lose to Miami. Now to get back to some normal sleep again!
