Hi, I am looking to take my boyfriend to Water Fire for his birthday (one night). The Hotel Providence looks more our speed (only 80 rooms), but if the Marriot is in a better location, we could stay there. Any suggestions? Also, I was planning on eating dinner in Federal Hill, but would it be more convenient to eat by the basin? Lastly are the Gondolas kind of silly, or are they fun for a special occasion? Thanks!

We just did Waterfire this past Sat. night and it was absolutely packed to the hilt! We were planning on either using Priceline or Hotwire to book the Westin..but ended up going with some friends instead who did not want to overnight it. I have friends who have done Marriot and really enjoy it. There is alot of construction going on around the Basin
and some of the walking paths were closed, which made the walk around and about that area incredibly crowded and uncomfortable. We actually turned around and went up to the street in that area. We have never eaten at Federal Hill, cuz we like to either picnic on river. There are so many eateries in that vicinity, I am sure you would be able to find one and enjoy the waterfire ambience with your dinner; judging from the crowds, reservations would be in order. Haven't done the Gondolas yet, but think the view and ride on them would be especially fun! I love this event and try to go at least 2times a yr.
I checked Hotel Providence's website and it doesn't look like it's within walking distance. Double check the Marriot's location because I think there's more than one. The Marriot across from Providence Place is definitely more convenient to Water Fire. Federal Hill is an interesting neighborhood. If you cook, it would be fun to explore a grocery before dinner (or that might be a bad idea). Keep in mind it's an uphill walk to that area. When we were at Water Fire, everyone was crowded around the basin watching the fire and listening to music.
Hotel Providence is within walking distance of Water Fire...The Mariott is a bit more of a hike, in a very quite area of the city...the COURTYARD by Mariott is in the best location fior Water Fire, across the street from the Mall, near restaurants and other sights.
Federal Hill is always nice for Dinner, but don;t know if they get packed during waterfire nights...can't comment on the Gondolas.
