I understand you like museums, but two whole days for two museums? I think that's a bit much. Also, even after you rest the first day, you'll still have time to do something.

Day 1 after your rest: walk around Georgetown or Dupont Circle, or walk by the White House, or walk around the mall and look at the two outdoor sculpture gardens, or go to the National Archives.

Day 2: 1/2 day museum, 1/2 day at the monuments.

Day 3: 1/2 day museum, 1/2 day Arlington, or Mt. Vernon, or the Capitol or the Supreme Court.

Well...we have lots of museums here in DC -- what do you and your son like to see? You could probably do more than one museum in a day, too. How much does your son like museums? Do you want to break up the day with something more teen-oriented? Seems like a boy who likes trains might like the tremendously popular Air & Space Museum.

With respect to the train, you can take the regular northeast corridor train and go regular class or business or you could take Acela, which is all business class. I don't think either the business class on the regular train or Acela is worth the added cost.

There are a few museums you could spend a large part of a day in, if you really want. The Newsmuseum, for example. You also spend many hours in the American History or Natural History if you really want to view everything. I suppose the National Gallery, but I don't think it takes as much time as things like the history museums where you have to do a lot of reading to understand the exhibits.

It's your plan, do what you really love, I think you are th eonly one who can decide on that one, re the museums (by the way, the cafeteria in the nat history is really good, if I'm remembering correctly and the gelato stand in the basement of the National Gallery is actually pretty decent).

As for the train -- no, it's not worth it IMO. But again, if you look at what it includes, it's just your decision as to whether it is worth it to you. I think there is one car where you are forbidden to talk on a cellphone, or a quiet car, and that's the only attraction to me. I won't even pay for Acela as the time isn't that different in how long it takes.
