I think it depends on the day and time of day and when you are going. We went during the week in late October around 11:00 am. Only 10 people in line. Took the next tour with about a 30 min wait. Same situation with the Washington Monument. I read that you also had to get in line very early to get these tickets too.

My hub and I went to DC for our honeymoon and we walked right in to the mint and paid for a tour. Around and above the mint proper, was an enclosed area where people walked and saw money actually being made. We really enjoyed it and I always recommend it to visitors.

That being said, this happened 33 years ago so things may have changed. Or, because we are talking about the govt. it may be just the same! Do call them first.

Please check about the Washington Monument also-I do believe it was closed for repair again. Anyone know?

I'm curious about why you couldn't get White House tickets. Is that still done with your Congressperson?

White house tickets are very limited even if you have a very senior or important congressperson.

A couple of years ago, we walked up to the mint and it took about 15 minutes in line to get in. We thought it was worth the wait to get in, as both the money printing and the gift shop were interesting.

So, Cris87, your congressperson said WH tickets were all booked? Can you try back to see if there were any cancellations?

Thanks for your replies about the Mint. We're going to try and go early to get tickets to the Mint and Holocaust museum on the same day. Any other suggestions on that?

About the White House, we applied through our congressman, had to provide all sorts of info including social security numbers and just found out we weren't able to get tickets. We applied about 2 months early. Other family members applied 6 months early and still weren't able to get tix. Bummer.

I think WH tours are luck-of-the-draw. We applied as Cris87 describes, about 2-3 months in advance of our trip, and got an email telling us we "won" about 3 weeks later, no muss, no fuss. But I know people who applied through the same congressperson and did not succeed. It's just luck, whether your congressperson has slots to spare on the day or days you can go.

TDudette, I too went to the Mint back in the late 60's. Much different now. You cannot see the whole process as you could back then. However, it is still interesting.
