My husband and I are flying into DC in two weeks then heading over to Delaware. We will see the Nationals/Cubs baseball game and stay the night in DC after the game. We know nothing about the area around the stadium. Can anyone recommend a hotel nearby, best ways to get to/from the game (rental car v. subway)?

There isn't much around the stadium as much as I could tell from being there. With the subway in DC, you can stay anywhere and be close to the stadium. Was very easy to get there on Metro. I would just pick a hotel in DC near the mall and take the Subway. Parking was very expensive and limited near the game based on the signs that we saw.
Agree with tchoiniere, take the metro and stay elsewhere. R u planning on leaving first thing in the am or staying in DC and sigthseeing and then leaving? That might make a difference as to where u would want to spend the night.
Yes tchoiniere is correct, there isn't any place good to stay near the stadium.
Try Penn Quarter, Downtown, Dupont Circle.
Take Metro to and from the game.

Not completely true.
There is a Courtyard by Marriott within two blocks of the stadium. There is the recently renovated Capitol Skyline Hotel, within three blocks. A 15 minute walk from the stadium is a Residence Inn.
If you will only be in DC for the game, it makes sense to stay near the ballpark. The new Marriott Courtyard is at 2nd and L, only a block or two away.

I would get a hotel in the Penn Quarter. Lots of hotels to choose from. Plus, it's a fun area to stay in (including at night after the game). Then it's a Metro straight shot on the Green Line.
There is absolutely no reason to stay near the Ballpark even if you are in town just for a game. The area around the Ballpark hasn't been built up enough to merit staying there yet. The Metro is very easy, and staying somewhere else will give the freedom to check out something else. I recommend Penn Quarter as well, but many other places are nice.
At the game, make sure you get a half smoke from Ben's Chili Bowl, and a helmet sundae. Just get your sundae well before the 7th, because the line will be REALLY long. The Ben's line can be really long, too, but there's a cart on the first base side of the concourse in the outfield area that should be much shorter than the stand on the third base line. The bar in the outfield is fun, too.
Check the Nats website to see if they have fireworks on the night you'll be there. They aren't the same as the Fourth of July, but they're worth staying for. Plus, the Metro line will thin out a little bit.

If you are coming from the airport, getting a rental car, going to your hotel, going to the game, and leaving for Delaware the next morning, the area around the stadium is actually perfect. The parking is probably cheaper at the hotel, it's right on the way to the beach, and it's a direct shot from National Airport.
It is true there isn't much around there and will be pretty vacant until game time, but it's not a completely bad idea.

True, whether they stay near the ballpark or anywhere else in the city. Metro or taxi from airport to hotel on day one, metro or taxi from hotel to car pick-up on day two-- about the same wherever they stay.
Also, Metro will be really packed after the Cubs games. Though Metro is a breeze when the visiting team does not have a zillion fans in DC (Rockies, Mariners, e.g), games with Chicago, Boston and NYC teams draw 40,000 people so there is a crush on the trains. I'd opt for the new hotel in walking distance for that one-night stay.
