We are planning a first time visit to Washington DC the end of September. My husband found a B&B on line -- American Guest House, 205 Columbia Rd NW. The rates seem too good to be true to me and the pictures look like a really nice place. Does anyone of knowledge of this place?
What is the best way to ensure you don't book yourself in a bad neighborhood or lousy location?
Thanks!
Washington, DC

Are you familiar with TripAdvisor.com? This place gets very good reviews there. It's near Dupont Circle, considered a good location for DC. Go for it and report back!
205 Columbia Rd NW is RIGHT NEXT to Washington Hospital Center.
It's not a "bad" neighborhood, but not really too good either.
It's not close to Metro and not close to any shopping or eating options (unless you count the hospital...).
I suggest you pass on this one and look at places that charge more.
I'd be happy to comment on anything else you come up with.
I just look up the B&B's website.
It''s at 2005 Columbia Rd not 205 Columbia Rd.
The actual location (2005 Columbia Rd.) is GREAT. I agree - go for it.

You must know the P is Dupont is NOT capitalized and it is a Metrorail station, not a subway station!!

Near Dupont is a GREAT place to stay in DC.
I love the Dupont Circle area of DC. We stayed there for the first time a couple years ago and it was great. DH and I have both been back to DC for work since then and always choose Dupont Circle area if we can. Metro stop right there, plenty of restaurants within walking distance, and the neighborhood is just really walkable and comfortable. The Philips Collection is in that neighborhood - great for anyone who enjoys art museums.
It's not a bad area, but it is a bit above Dupont Circle, although it's not far. The metro is maybe 5-6 blocks away. It's north of the Hilton, for example. So it isn't bad and is fine if you like the place, but I wouldn't say it is "great" myself in terms of convenience. I'd rather be closer to a metro stop.
On the other hand, you can walk to the Adams Morgan area more easily from there, as it's probalby closer than Dupont Circle, maybe that location is about in the middle of the two. Hard to say what kind of neighborhood vibe you are seeking as to whether that would be an attractive proposition or not (being near Adams Morgan).
