Warwick, RI & Burlington/Plattsburg, VT
Hello.
This is a very vague and general question but am intersted in what people have to say. I am looking at jobs and I saw some in Warwick, RI and Burlington, VT. I was wondering what these cities are like to live in esp. for someone in the mid-20's. Thanks.

Can't tell you about Warwick, but Plattsburgh is not really very "happening" for someone of your age (or anyone, for that matter).Burlington is wonderful, but housing in this area sucks...a lot....there is a less than 1% vacancy rate, and what is out there is expensive. Can't stress enough that you need to arrive WITH housing already set up---the shelters are already full beyond capacity and it's not even winter yet. Just a fore-warning
The town is friendly and pretty hip...lots if bars (mostly catering to the college crowd, but a few for us grown-ups) and a lively arts scene. Don;t know where you're from, but it gets really cold up here...you have to be ready for the extreme seasons. Skiing and riding is prevelant, and every season offers a tons of fun things to do.

Well, M, it would help if we knew where you were living now. The climate in RI is much milder than in VT.
Warwick is a smaller city, really a suburb of Providence. There's plenty to do in Providence, as it has several colleges. One of them is Johnson and Wales culinary college, so there are plenty of great restuarants. Another, famous Rhose Island School of Design, gives the place an artistic ambience. If that's not enough culture for you, you're just an hour from Boston.
The "Providence" airport is actually in Warwick. Housing is reasonable, at least compared to other Northeastern cities -- just go to realtor.com to see what is available in the area. Warwick is right on the ocean, and noplace in RI is very far from a beach.

Joanne is right on the money. I have been to both and I would pick Warwick. I lived in RI for 4 years and it is quite beautiful near the beach. Access to Providence is key as you could easily live in the Brown Univ area (called the East Side) and car commute 15 mins away. If you like winter sports, consider VT. We would go there as kids to ski in Burlington and it is quite lovely but QUIET. If you like summer sports, consider RI. The other thing to consider with RI is that you are close to Boston, Hartford and a lot of other cities/towns.

I don't care for the Plattsburgh area. Really the only nice thing I can say is that it's close to Montreal. I like Burlington a lot. The area is beautiful, and with it being a college city, there's a lot to do. My only complaint is that it's becoming so popular that the new houses that are going up look like cookie cutters. Still a great place, I'd love to live there. I think most people would be most comfortable in the Providence area. A great city and near Boston too.
Not as cold either! I'd be happy here too. Doesn't have the drop dead scenery of Burlington, but a lot less isolated too.

Toronto, eh? Well, I guess the weather isn't such a big concern. But if you're used to big-city amenities, from movie theaters to museums to supermarkets, then probably Warwick would be a better fit. If you enjoy city life, then think carefully about the adjustment to Vermont.

Burlington is definitely not as "city-fied" as Providence (which I also love)...but please don't think we're soooo isolated either. Burlington's population is around 40k, and I actually believe it's more with the students (in other words, I don't believe the students are figured into the census figure)...and we have a lot that the bigger cities offer without a lot of the big city hassles---but the rents are about the same
Since they are both so close...your best bet is to make a trip and check them both out...good luck!

You haven't mentioned where you live now, but your best bet would be to visit each and check out the housing availability/cost in each area, along with other things that are important to you (nightlife, etc.). In your 20's, a magnificent career opportunity may be mixed with a not-so-magnificent place to live. But, you may be too busy working to notice. Both destinations have their huge plusses and huge minuses. If you're not married and have no children, a visit to both (for more than a weekend) should tell you which is most appealing to you. If the job is more important, you'll do just fine in either location. There's plenty all around and within a reasonable proximity to both to enjoy yourself.
