Is it better to sit far on the side of in the orchestra or in the middle in the loge? (That's all that's available when I can go.)

I'd go for the loge seats. There really are no bad sight lines in the theater. And the center of the loge, no matter how far back is good. (Besides, I'd rather be facing the performers straight on rather than from the side.)
Agreed about the loge. In the Vivian Beaumont theater, side orchestra is virtually alongside, not in front of, the thrust stage. Here's a seating chart: http://bit.ly/gZvRgP
