Wanting to do romatic getaway with hubby

For Christmas, I am giving my hubby one fanatastic weekend alone with me. Unfortunately, because he works in retail, we have to wait until Feb. to do it. I only have a couple hundred dollars that I can use on this mini vacation, so we will be driving. I don't want a long drive though. And it needs to be in the midwest area, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin, or Illinois. Does anybody have any suggestions. Thanks in advance for your time and help.
Paula

Jeez, Paula, you'd better ask Santa for this gift, because it's going to be a hard one for you to fill. You say you don't want a long drive - where is your starting point? And you only have a couple hundred dollars for lodging/food/entertainment for the whole weekend? Just want to clarify, before I offer any suggestions.

Maybe you could find a good deal at one of the hotels at the Wisconsin Dells. February is definitely a low season there with many of the resorts barely having enough guests to stay open for those winter months. Call and bargain hard for a good rate. While it's not the most exciting destination, it might work for your budget. Try and find one of the resorts that offers an indoor pool.

Another suggestion: the Dubuque Galena area has several quaint B&Bs and shops.

For this area in mid-February, I suggest you plan as short a drive as possible. As I'm sure you're aware, a blizzard can easily hit that area in February, and being stuck in a foot of snow is NOT conducive to happy memories.

To C and Paul, thank you for your advice. I was thinking something along those lines. Since I was born and raised in Iowa, I know all to well about the blizzards and how the weather affects driving. I don't really want an exciting vacation, just some time for the two of us alone.

To HoHoHo. I must say that I was a little hurt by the tone of your response. I realize that most people think they need to spend large amounts on their vacations, but I don't. Every vacation that I have ever done, has cost less than $1,000. To answer your question, I will be starting from Cedar Rapids, IA. Yes I only have a couple of hundred dollars to spend on the lodging, but since I am not planning on doing this until after Christmas, I am sure that I will be able to save up more money to use for entertainment and food.
