wanted: unusual things to do in new orleans
i will be going to new orleans in 2 weeks, staying near the french quarter, and will have a car. i like jazz and blues music. I would like to see some of the areas of new orleans to see how they have or have not recovered from the floods. Also, any medium price restuarant suggestions?

This place on the edge of the French Quarter has good live jazz 7 days a wk. It is more contemporary than Preservation Hall jazz. Musicians like Allen Toussaint, Charmaine Neville, and Ellis Marsalis play here regularly.

If you haven't been to the Audubon Zoo, it deserves a famous reputation.
Taking the street car out to the Garden District is a pleasure.
I will defer to locals for current mid priced restaurant recommendations. N.O. always has superb cuisine at modest prices, but you will get better guidance from another.

Audubon Zoo! Be sure to get some meat/crawfish pies back at the Swamp exhibit cafe! Take the street car and walk thru Audubon Park to get there. It's a bit of a hike, but a beautiful walk.
WWII museum! It is quite good. My step-father has a brick with his name on it and has donated some of his WWII memorabilia.
Snug Harbor! I used to go there and watch Harry Connick, Jr when he was just in high school!
Definitely do a flood tour. We haven't done it formally, but there are certain areas I check on myself whenever I'm there. Was sad to see one of my first homes torn down.....but it was so badly damaged, it really needed to be, so it really was a good thing.

Restaurant recs in the mid range are Napolean House, Cafe Maspero, Deanie's seafood, and the muffaletta sandwich at Central Grocery! Of course Acme Oyster and Felix's are a must if you like oysters.
Frenchman street has great live music...the bars are all on the same street, so just go and have a great time. Also Preservation Hall is a MUST GO...in the FQ.
