Want suggestions for April-June '99

My 30-something daughter & I plan a 5-day getaway next year. I had hoped to combine a special event with a neat city (for example, New Orleans & Mardi Gras); but we must travel sometime between 4/15/99 and 6/15/99. Any suggestions anyone?

Some questions before we can give good advice:

1) how far are you willing to travel to get to a neat city?

2) if there are some limits to the above (i.e., if you don't want to drive for more than five hours), where do you live?

3) what type of "special event" are you hoping for (or would avoid like the plauge)? A Jazz Festival would be great for some people but a waste of time for others.

4) what type of things would make you view a city as "neat"? Nightlife? Food? Museums? History? Cultural or ethnic diversity? Shopping? Some cities are VERY strong in one but surprisingly weak in others.

The more specific you are in what you are looking for, the better answers you will get.

Come toQuebec City, Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver, depending on where you live. The intrigue of a foreign country, where your dollar goes a long way. EAch city has lots for a 30 year old and her mom; are safe, interenstng, historiacal in various ways and yet very contemporary.

Listne my friend, and you will hear, about the midnight ride of Paul Revere...Boston pride comes alive on Patriots Day the third Monday in April. Each year thousands line the route of the Boston Marathon to cheer the runners home. This is a very festive time with many activiites planned throughout Mass. The history in Boston would keep you busy, as well as side trips not just Lexington and Concord, but Harvard Sq to Cape Ann (Salem, Gloucester, Rockport) offers many possibilities. Do a search here, lots of posts have been written on Boston.

If you enjoy Tulips, there are various festivals in May. I have heard from relatives that Holland Michigan is quite a sight at that time. If you look in the calendar of events from this past March/April and May/June issue of National Geographic Traveler magazine you will see all the special events around the country for the time period you are speaking of. If you do not subscribe, back issues can usually be found at the library.

My girlfriend and I went on a wonderful vacation a few years ago to Seattle and then on to Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia. While in Seattle, we did the touristy things down on the waterfront and we drove south of Seattle and drove as far up Mt. Rainier as possible. The view and scenary were breath-taking. We left Seattle and drove 3 1/2 hours to Vancouver and toured the city there. It is a great city for walking and doing outdoor stuff. We took a ferry over to Victoria, and we felt like we had traveled to England. The victorian homes were really neat. A must-see is Buchart Gardens while you are there. It is a 2 hour walking tour through some of the most beautifully manicured gardens and landscaping that you ever want to see. There is plenty on this vacation for mom and daughter. I am 37 yrs. old. Wherever you go, have fun. The previous reply about Boston is also true. That was another vacation that was very wonderful.

The week that includes April 21 is Fiesta Week in San Antonio. There is a river parade on Monday, fiestas in La Villita (next to the river & Hemisfair Plaza that whole week in the evenings, day parade on Friday & night parade on Saturday. SA has 3 amusement parks, the Alamo, River Walk & is just a fun city. On Sunday at noon, Mission San Jose has a mariachi mass. You are 1 hour from the Hill Country (jewelry, German influence, LBJ Ranch on Perdeneles). If you are lucky, the wildflowers may be blooming still--really beautiful sight. Will Rogers called SA one of the 5 unique cities in the US. Since you can't make New Orleans (1 of the other 4,try this for a good party & friendly folk).
