It's the only type I own and since I live in a dry climate, it's fine. But for my trip to Oregon, where I know it's pretty rainy and wet, would that type still work or should I get a pair that's all leather?

We won't be doing any type of dramatic hikes or anything that's not on a regular trail, but I'm thinking it still might get wet? Or am I being overly cautious?

It really depends on how much you care about wet feet and how fast your shoes will dry.

kellie, if we were planning on doing a lot of hiking or hiking in areas where there was going to be a lot of crossing streams, blazing your own trail, that type of thing, I would definitely invest in a pair of hiking shoes.

But we're really going to be taking it sort of easy this time. Short walks to lookouts, beaches, mostly (if not all) on paved or at least existing trails. So I'm wondering if my regular mesh sneakers would work. I hate to buy a pair of shoes that I would hardly ever use (after this trip).

This is a fall trip by the way.

What time of year are you coming and where are you planning to be?

Actually, do you have an Easy Spirit outlet near you? I find tons of great closed toe comfy shoes there for $20 or less. When we were in Ireland and it rained the entire time, I was very glad to have my closed toe shoes. A pair of something like that with some waterproof spray on them would keep you nice and dry and be very comfy.

beachbum and mms, we will be there in early September and would be doing the "safe" touristy stuff. Going to a couple of waterfalls along the CRG. Also will be on the coast, so doing some of those trails and walks, but all (from what I can tell) will be on paved or at least existing trails, so I was hoping I could get by with my mesh shoes (which are so comfortable).

kellie, I never heard of that store, but it's not around my area. Thanks for the info though.

You've never heard of Easy Spirit?!? They are the high heels you can play basketball in (or so the ads go). You have to have one somewhere. They are everywhere.

Early Sept. is pretty safe as far as the weather. We usually have some of our best weather during this time. I would just bring what you have and unless we have some freak rainstorm, you will be fine.

The shoes I use for the Seattle Marathon each year in late November (so lots of rain) are mesh and they dry out, so if we get a bit of rain, don't worry

SeeingtheSights--We purposely planned our outdoor wedding for early September because of the weather. That year we had the second hottest day of the summer, so that should give you a clue as to our weather at this time

What? You're expecting existing trails? And pavement? ;-)

Since the grey gloom and accompanying rain don't usually set in until around the middle of October, I think you'll be fine. That timing is not ordained by the gods though..... Were I in your shoes (so to speak), I'd be more concerned about getting beach sand in them. Just hate that!! ;-)

I've found a few sites that say the average temps in early Sept. were low 60s, along the coast anyway. Is that true? I was wondering if there might be at least some shorts and slipper type weather that time of year, like around 70? Or should I just plan on jeans and shoes all the time?

Seeing, I will be in Portland early September too. Plan on checking weather.com to see approximately if rain is predicted, and how hot/cold it will get.

I think if you have closed-toe mules on thick sole, you will be fine even in the rain.

Some of us wear shorts year round, but I think 70 for early Sept is a safe bet. As mms says, it's one of our best weather months. And besides, how can you take a vacation that includes the beach without packing shorts???? Think layers for the top though, and pack at least one that sheds water.

Slippers? Those are what we wear before bed and when we get up in the morning. ;-)

Sometimes some of our warmest weather of the year is in early September. Never know, it could be a heatwave. I would defintely bring shorts and sandals in addition to jeans and closed shoes.
