Are you serious? The bus system takes an awfully long time. You don't want to rent a car? Even with a car it takes about an hour to get into town.
Go to www.thebus.org for routes and a timetable..............

As long as you have a strong bladder its not a bad idea at all. Pay no attention to the nay sayers. I lived in Waikiki for over a year about ten years ago and I used to take the bus all the time. As I recall there are a couple of buses that will get you to the north shore. Unfortunately I don't remember the numbers. As I recall, one goes up the Pali Hwy which is very pretty as it goes through the mountain range.
The other which I took more frequently goes along the beautiful east coast past Hanauma Bay, Sandy Beach, Makapuu Beach and Waimanalo Beach. Very nice. Beach on your right, mountains on the left. Very beautiful.
Just be sure to check the schedules because some run more often than others, but they are all on time (at least thats the way it used to be). I'm going back this year in June for vacation after 10 years! Can't wait.

I love Samantha Brown's shows on Hawaii and was intrigued by her coverage of the bus that cirles the island (I thought for a buck, but evidently it was $2). She said it was one of the best (and least stressful) ways to see Oahu.
We did rent a car and stopped for lunch, a stop at a beach and for the famous shaved ice, but I would imagine you could replicate that on the bus.
Do some research - and enjoy!

Yes, you can take The Bus - but as many have said, it can be a very long ride. As recommended, check the schedules.
If you decide to get off The Bus - which I'm assuming you plan to do - make sure you're aware of how often the bus stops in the area you were dropped off in. Some routes it's an hour or more between buses - and if you miss it, you've got to wait for another hour.
Ten years ago the traffic was much better than it is today.

I asked this exact same question before my trip last month (and received the same answers). Once I got to Honolulu I ended up having plenty to do there, and never attempted the North Shore trip (honestly the two hour bus ride did deter me). That said, taking The Bus around Honolulu was very easy and convenient (the route toward Hanama Bay, over to the mall to go to the food court for a cheap dinner, etc.)
