We're exploring lodging options for a trip to Maui in March. Ideally would like to find a 2-bedroom near the beach for under $200. Lots of VRBO options, but can't decide about locale. We've usually stayed north in the Kaanapali area, but like the idea of somewhere less cono-like. Any input about how the Wailea, Kihei, and Maalaea areas compare? Should we be concerned about sugar cane burning? Thanks!

I stay in Maalaea and North Kihei because I can find affordable oceanfront/beachfront 2B/2B condos there for the price you indicate. I doubt if you can find anything in Wailea in your price range. In So. Maui that price will have you on the other side of Kihei Road. Beaches are better in So. Kihei, but I like to stay closer to the water. Cane burning used to be a problem in Maalaea however the fields there are now harvested by machine rather than burning. It has become my preferred area because of the low rates, great ocean views, and easy access for day trips all over the island. I'm going to be there in March and hope for some whale action.
Be aware that the reputation for mid-day wind is well-deserved and that there is not much availability left for March.
Good agencies where you can see units and availability on line are:
www.maalaeabay.com (Maalaea only)
www.bellomaui.com (Kihei and Maalaea)
www.rentalsmaui.com (Kihei & sosme Wailea)
I think your price range can get you Wailea or at the least south Kihei. I don't like the wind in Maalaea, and there is agricultural drainage into the harbor area there.
From a thread a couple of days ago:
Kamaole Sands (nice location, very nice gardens and pool), then immediately south Hale Kamaole (location, and open green lawn-type grounds, then Maui Kamaole (up on a rise, bit more of a walk to the beach), are all in your price range, and are south enough to be out of the main drag of traffic, but close enough to shops and restaurants. They are all across the street from the Kamaole Beach Parks.
On the beach, just a bit farther south, is Mana Kai Maui (but not all condos, and rocky shoreline; little walk to the sand).
Note that if you do go to VRBO, you could probably get places in Wailea for your price range.
