W New York, Regency, Easy Subway Access?

The more I read re hotels - the more confused I get - Headed to New York Feb 1-11. Need hotel with easy subway access for husband to get to Crowne Plaza LaGuardia for conference but also easy walking to shopping/sites. We love to walk but worried about bad weather in Feburary so would like to be as close as possible - (we will be bringing 2 year old.) Should we stay a few days at one hotel and then move to another for the other half? I was thinking W New York and then Parker Meridien or Regency for other. Found pretty good rates for these at quickbook.

When you are in NYC., I would not suggest changing hotels, since using the subway will get you around Manhattan. It's not like staying on a Hawaiian island where one part of the island is quite far from another.

The W NY is in a convienent part of town, and being a relatively new hotel (created from an older one) it is quite stylish.

You mention your husband is using the subway to get to his conference? The hotel doesn't seem that close to the 'n' train stop. Have you checked with the hotel as to how long it would take to walk? As you say, it is cold in Feb., and the stops are not as close in Queens. Can't he expense cab rides to the hotel?

He could expense the cab but with what I've read about traffic I thought the subway would be faster and easier. We are not familiar at all with the NY subway system. Is there a hotel that would provide better access? or is a cab ride back and forth from the W to Crown Plaza LaGuardia for 5 days feasible? I guess to make it easy for him we should just stay at the Crown Plaza but we've never been to NYC before and thought a different hotel might be better. Thanks for your help.

Is the Crown Plaza LaGuardia at/near LaGuardia Airport? Figure taxi between downtown and Laguardia is about $35 inc. tip. Could be there's a car service that would be cheaper since he'd be using it 5-days a week. I've stayed at the Crown Plaza near Times Square and found it to be great (hosted a meeting there and they were really helpful with ALL arrangements). With a 2-year old, you may want to look for a suite hotel -- gives you a kitchenette and a bit more room for toddler to toddle than a typical hotel room. I love the W (if you go, be sure to join Starwood for points -- website is www.preferredguest.com -- if you're there for two weeks, you may also get Friday nights free.) BUT the room may get really small with the babe. I can't remember the suite hotel I stayed in a couple of years ago, but it really was lovely and cost no more than a room mid-town. (I think it was located in the East 30's)

Diane you read my mind -- That's just why I was thinking of changing hotels! I thought I'd like to see the W (it sounds nice on the net - also we are members of the Starwood deal and my husband wants his points!) but didn't think I could last 10 days with my 2 year old in a small room! Also hadn't read great reviews of the Sheraton NY - but now I am seeing some positive posts - perhaps I should try there? The suite idea sounds like a good one. In the reading I've seen suggested the Benjamin, Plaza 50?, looks like Loews has some Suites? But I can't get enough info to judge distance to shopping or subway stops. If the weather is bad - the location of hotel (and atmosphere) is going to be really important. Any ideas appreciated. Or should we just stay at Conference hotel? This is our first trip to New York. I am really getting mental about this hotel thing.

Hi Donna:
The MTA website www.mta.nyc.ny.us will give you some ideas and maps.
The subway can be daunting for a first timer--don't worry, ask someone for help we love to give assistance. The Crowne Plaza LaGuardia is right outside the airport in Queens. Not too accessible, I'm Afraid. He might be better off if he cabs it as long as the company is paying!! Any of the hotels you mention would be just fine for you. How about Radio City Apartments. Might be good for you and convenient with a 2 year old. www.radiocityapartments.com. Good Luck and Welcome to NYC!
