vrbo or similar in San Fran, any recommendations?

Looking to rent apartment for 5-6 nights early September 2008. 2 couples, so ideally 2 bathrooms (toilets at least) and space for 2 double beds - not in same room. Have checked out VRBO website and there are several options but would welcome personal experience.
Much other useful information already obtained form this board - thanks
Hilary

Check out those listed in "The Marina", Pacific Hgts and N. Beach. You will be in close proximity to most things. After that look at Noe Valley. I am earnestly trying to think of places that will not be banked in fog at that time of year, will be safe and have ready access to goods and services.

The neighborhoods Pam mentions are fine. Noe Valley and the adjacent Liberty Hill area too.

Some other thoughts:

Looking at the vrbo website, I see some rentals available on Nob Hill or Russian Hill that are a bit pricey but spacious. If you want to splurge a little, I'd investigate these, especially if the places have views of the Bay - the views from Russian Hill in particular are the classic ones you see in guidebooks and fall in love with. Another plus is the easy proximity to downtown - but remember these are hills which might seem mountainous to the uninitiated.

Another possibility would be the Inner Sunset, for its handiness to Golden Gate Park, its nice neighborhood feel, and multitude of restaurants. Not close to downtown, but good transit connections.

If you pick some specific addresses off vrbo or similar, do post back and we'll chime in.

Not a private apartment, but a spectacular two bedroom/two bath beautifully furnished serviced apt on Chestnut in the wonderful Marina District. Comes with a fireplace living room and full kitchen. Plus there's complimentary garage parking below with a keyed elevator up to your apartment.
Should run $275 a night which is a steal for the quality.

Thanks neopatrick.
I've looked at the website, this looks like a good option. Will carry on with the research

I almost didn't suggest it as it is always full. Then I realized you have a year -- not just a month. There are only something like a dozen apartments, some one bedroom. So there isn't a lot of availability and they really fill up.
We've stayed there several times. The one time 4 of us shared a two bedroom, there was a queen bed in one bedroom with private bath, and there were TWO Queen (or king?) four poster canopy beds in the other bedroom.

The used to also do 10 percent or so off if you stayed 5 nights, but I see the website now says "discounts for weekly or monthly stays".

Have just made a reservation at Cow Hollow Suites, seems like it will be ideally suitable for 2 couples and give us some flexibility over meals as we don't want to eat out all the time.

I think you'll be very happy there. Those large apartments seem or feel like real apartments, including the decor -- not a generic hotel.
