We will be flying into Philadelphia on Oct. 6 and flying out on Oct. 11. We have visited the city of Philadephia many times to see the historic places. This time we plan to drive out of the city to see the fall foliage in Penn. and surrounding states.
We are looking for fall foliage, small towns of interest, Amish, and good places to eat. Two places we plan to visit are the Mennnonite Center near Lancaster as my husband loves history and Longwood Gardens since we love flowers. We are open for other suggestions.

You can't ask for a prettier area than Bucks County north along the Delaware River. There is a lot of history in that area and quaint villages.
Lancaster itself is a very attractive town -- it has some nice old architecture, a pleasant downtown market area, and a couple small museums (I especially liked the Lancaster Quilt and Textile Museum). There's plenty around this area as well depending on your interests, including Wheatland (James Buchanan's home), Ephrata Cloisters, and the Amish Farm and House.
Harrisburg has one of the most striking and lovely state capitol buildings in the country as well as a Civil War Museum and Pennsylvania History Museum.
Hershey is a good choice for folks who like chocolate and/or amusement parks.
And there's also Gettysburg, which is a must for Civil War aficionados.
Would suggest a search online or a look through a guidebook or two on this area.
Cape May, NJ is a beautiful sea shore town with Victorian architecture. Lots of great restaurants and B&Bs. Probably about 2 hours from Philly.
You may also like Winterthur, a duPont estate in Delaware, the Mercer Museum in Doylestown, Pa, or Valley Forge National Park in Pa.
You could take a ride up to the Poconos. Great fall foliage there. Hickory Run State Park. Jim Thorpe is a cute little town up there.
Lot's to see and do in Lancaster area, but don't count on Fall foliage in the southern part of the state before the end of October. Downtown Lancaster has plenty of history and quite a few art galleries and small shops. Newest thing downtown is the new Marriott Hotel , right on the square - opened in June. Stunning.
Well, what about Gettysburg. Just returned from a Historic Tour that included Gettysburg. I could not see enough of it. The town has many antique shops and eating places and of course, the Battle Field and museum.
In PA you will be early for the fall colors. I suggest that you travel northward - at least to the Poconos or as has been suggested to the Delaware River above New Hope.
We live in PA. For the very same time as you are traveling, we are going to the Berkshires in western CT and MA.
