Visiting colleges in B'more, Annapolis, DC: Where to stay?

Well, I guess that long heading says it all: We live in New England, my daughter wants to visit 5 or 6 schools in those 3 cities, so we want to do one big trip. Is there one location where we can settle in and make forays into those locations, especially with access to public transport into DC and Baltimore? Right now we're considering staying in Annapolis, but perhaps there's some town on the Metro/train line that would be handier?

Suzy,

Sorry to say this dog won't hunt.

DC and Baltimore are 40 miles apart. Annapolis is 30 odd miles from DC and Bmore. There isn't a public trans system that easily accommodates all three places. The Metro services Virginia and Maryland suburbs into DC. There are probably ways to get to Annapolis or Bmore from one of the Metro stops but those are most like to operate only during rush hour. And depending on the time of day, traffic between any of the named points can be a nightmare.

I think you're going to have to change hotels at least one time.

Perhaps people can be more helpful is you list which schools your daughter is looking at.

Hi Suzy

If you're looking into Annapolis schools you can stay in Annapolis (Residence Inn, Mainstay, Sheraton, new Holiday Inn or Marriott on water) and get to the DC subway using RT 50 to Lanham. You can get to Baltimore using the BWI airport system of trains and buses. I live in Annapolis and would always suggest it over DC or Baltimore.

Of course Suzy, you COULD stay at BWI if you wanted to be near a train site. The train would take you into Washington DC and I believe into baltimore - that would take a little more research. The DC train goes into Union Station (Capitol Hill). I imagine you're looking at St Johns College in Annapolis. If you're looking at GW or georgetown in DC then you'll still have a fair metro ride from Union Station to Foggy Bottom and to Georgetown. Catholic University would be a little easier as its in NE DC. I'm not certain if you're referring to Johns Hopkins in Baltimore or not (it's in a downtown area ???)

You are looking at two distinct traffic problems (DC and Balto)

No Metro into Georgetown. If that's one of the schools, suggest you stay over in Arlington---recommend the Marriott Key Bridge. You can easily walk or taxi to Georgetown and can get the metro to go to GWU.

If you will have a car, consider the Bowie, MD area. At the intersection of Rts. 50 and 301, there are several hotels...the Hampton and Comfort Inns, I think. There are restaurants and stores nearby. It is an equidistance to the Metro subway system for DC, the light line to Baltimore and you can drive into Annapolis in about 20 min (park in the city garages and walk to St John's or the Naval Academy).

Enjoy your trip. Try to avoid Navy football games (usna.edu) and the boatshow weekends when you come to Annapolis.

All 3 points are served out of New Carrollton station -- MARC trains for DC or Balto, Metro to DC, and a bus from that station to Annapolis, though just on weekdays I think. There is a Ramada Inn nearby that has a shuttle to the New C station, there might be others.
