Actually, I am at a conference working 0800-4:00 each day, but my Husband will be there able to drive within a reasonable distance, and be back to our hotel early evening, and then we both want to visit sites as well. So, longer day trips from Charlotte, back to Charlotte by early evening, then any evening short trips around Charlotte. Hope this clears it up. THANK YOU.

Asheville is a great small town about 2.5 hours from Charlotte....could be doable in a day.
Columbia, S.C. is 90 minutes from Charlotte....could be some historical stuff there...they have a nice zoo.
I will be honest ...you will be reaching to entertain your hubby for 8 days here....nice place to live but as far as "seeing" things...not a lot.

I can't think of Civil War sites right off, but two Revolutionary Way sites come to mind: Guilford Court House in Greensboro http://www.nps.gov/guco/ and Kings Mountain, west of Charlotte off I-85 http://www.nps.gov/kimo
If your husband likes NASCAR there's tons to see. www.raceshops.com for directions to race team offices/garages. Most have viewing areas where you can peer into the garages and see the cars prepared. Several are near Concord NC. He can also tour Lowes Motor Speedway and take a lap around the track in the tour van.

I have to agree---not a great place to visit! Lived there and still return for shopping fixes but not much as far as entertainment other than Nascar. The Mint Museum is nice--close to downtown. Traffic can be bad so might have to wait til it dies down before heading out for the day--so if you want to avoid the congestion then you are limited on your time as well as an early return.
The other places I would mention have already been suggested.
Discovery Place is fun but geared towards kids!
Spencer NC has a Train Museum up I 85
Most of the civil war history is East of Charlotte.

If he likes historical sights I would suggest a visit to historic Brattonsville. Its a renovated village and Revolutionary war battlefield site.
There are also a few plantations around here that you may be interested in seeing.
I would have to agree with the above though. We moved to Charlotte a few months ago. Its a very nice place to live but its lacking in visitor sights.

Although you specifically mention wanting to visit Civil War sites, you might want to include a trip to King's Mountain during your visit to North Carolina.
King's Mountain is about 39 miles south of Charlotte, located along the North Carolina/South Carolina border.
The Battle of King's Mountain was considered by many historians to be a turning point in the Revolutionary War. British troops were completely routed during the skirmish, and sent limping back to New York where they departed for England and swore they'd never be back.
The park is beautiful, features a short film about the battle, a museum and a self-guided tour.

Brattonsville, just past York, SC is a very nice exhibit. As is Latta Plantation in North Mecklenburg--a Catawba River plantation. The Museum of History with the Hezekiah Alexander House is a nice historic site. Charlotte was not on the Civil War circuit much--earlier.
The Mint Museum (in Eastover, a lovely part of town) is quite nice as is the Mint Museum of Craft + Design, which is downtown. As well as the Museum of the New South, downtown.
IMAX theater at Discovery Place.
Ben Long's frescoes in the Bank of America headquarters are worth a look. Shopping in South End and SouthPark are good.
If you like pottery and have a whole day, go to Seagrove and browse over 100 potteries.
Old Salem for the Moravian village and the museum of Southern Decorative Arts is definitely worth a look.
