Visit Mt. Rushmore & nearby

Which airport Delta and Continental fly to for Mt. Rushmore? What are other neat places near Mt. Rushmore? Thanks

All of these are REALLY, REALLY CLOSE...

- Crazy Horse Memorial
(work in progress - will be world's largest sculpture when finished, much bigger than Mt. Rushmore's sculpture -- quite interesting to see / learn about)

www.crazyhorse.org

- Custer State Park (2+ hour drive-through with thousands of buffalo roaming)

www.custerstatepark.info

- The towns of Deadwood and Lead

There are daily "street shootouts and re-enactments" in Deadwood, the cemetery where Wild Bill Hitchcock, Calamity Jane, and others are buried.

There is the Broken Boot Gold Mine tour in Deadwood, and the Homestake Mine tour in Lead.

www.deadwood.org

- Mammoth Site is very interesting too (archaelogical dig with the bones still in place for you to view "as found".

www.mammothsite.com

- Jewel Cave National Monument
- Wind Cave National Park

(of these two, I went to Jewel Cave and it was very good. Certainly not as famous as Carlsbad Caverns, NM or Mammoth Caves, KY, but still a very good tour)

- Not to be missed while in SD, is Badlands National Park. A bit east of Mount Rushmore area, but well worth the visit.

If you are travelling during Sturgis bike week (in August), if not interested in that, you will want to stay well clear of Sturgis, Deadwood, Lead, area to be out of the traffic jams & crowds.

Hope this helps. Sorry can't help re: the airports.

Just did this a few months ago. Agree with the above poster. We loved Deadwood! Stayed at the Hampton Inn 4 Aces and would recommend it. Loved Custer State Park and all the buffalo. Stayed a night in the park and would recommend that. PLEASE while there, drive Needles Hwy, your car shimmies thru a very small opening, and also drive Iron Mountain Hwy ( there are great views from there of Mt Rushmore) By the way, Mt Rushmore is really cool at night cause it is lighted. Also enjoyed driving thru Badlands National Park.

Can anyone help out regarding where to fly into to go to South Dakota? One of my friends flew into Minneapolis and drove. Is that the best way to go?

We are going to Mt. Rushmore in May and are flying to Rapid City, SD. I believe United, Delta, and Northwest fly to Rapid City. Tickets are a bit pricey, but I just received an offer for a free companion voucher from United if I take their credit card. Even with the annual fee, this will be much cheaper than buying 2 tickets, at least based on the prices I can currently find. If United provides service to your area maybe you could contact them about this special offer.
