Virginia Thanksgiving?

We (family of 5) want to have a family "retreat" for Thanksgiving this year. Looking for lodging in a rustic setting, within a 4-hour drive of Dulles airport. Pluses would be indoor swimming, basketball court, hiking, or opportunities for similar physical activities. Of course, mom & dad would prefer vegging in front of the fireplace watching a little Waltons...but that's not realistic with three active teenagers!

Any suggestions for lodging for us would be greatly appreciated.

Hm. I can't comment on specific lodging, but a few parts of Virginia definitely come to mind. My first choice would be somewhere in the Shenandoah Valley. Wintergreen may be a good spot. The Williamsburg area is also a possibility. Since it is Thanksgiving, you could even drive to Berkeley Plantation (between Williamsburg and Petersburg) where Cpt. John Woodlief led the first actual English Thanksgiving ceremony in the New World.

Ditto Wintergreen www.wintergreenresort.com but it could be cold and rainy on that mountain.
See also www.kingsmillresort.com in Williamsburg. Both resorts have fireplaces, indoor swimming, spas, etc.

My line of the family has not been definitively connected to the good Captain, but it is likely. My parents and I recently made a first visit to the plantation. It is pretty historic, with important connections to presidents and the Civil War as well.

Both Kingsmill & Wintergreen are way out of our league financially. For 3 nights at W-green, it's going to be $1200. Kingsmill will be about $1000.

Any more ideas out there? Parks, cabins?

State parks in the West Virginia panhandle? Cacapon (pronounced kaKAYpon)comes to mind. Also look at Berkeley Springs WVa. They are more rustic than the Va choices mentioned.

Rocky Gap Lodge in Maryland's Rocky Gap State Park has an indoor swimming pool, hiking, and a lake for fishing. Its' not in Virginia, of course, but it's only about 2 hours from Dulles.

Another place that might work for you is the Woods Resort in the West Virginia panhandle.

I agree with Wintergreen or Williamburg. Great Wolf Lodge is an interesting place in Williamsburg that has an indoor waterpark. It is geared a little more toward younger children, but it is fun and very cozy.
I have rented condos at Wintergreen through an outside agency (not through the resort) that we cheaper-priced, but still in the resort with all amnenities. The name of the company escapes me, but I am thinking a google search could produce results...also rentals by owner.
Your idea sounds lovely...be sure to post and let us know what you do.

Also not Virginia but Blackwater Falls W.Va has both cabins and a lodge area:
