We're planning a week long Spring visit to Virginia to take in Monticello and Montpelier and other historic sites. We have a particular interest in gardens. Any advice on itinerary from Richmond would be appreciated.

Take route 5 off of 295 to Jamestown/williamsburg. Scenic road that passes plantations. Dogwood should be in bloom. Check out the gardens in Richmond. .
Azalea gardens in Norfolk is great also
Hi, Bob--
Depending on when you travel, you may be around for Va. Garden Week -- check out http://www.vagardenweek.org/tour.htm. Also, don't miss the University of Virginia Gardens on both sides of the original campus buildings, which are lovely too.
I want to second Cynthia's suggestion. Historic Garden Week in Virginia is a unique opportunity to visit many private homes and gardens not usually open to the public. Also around Richmond Maymont Park is lovely and historic, and the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens are growing every year. Also visiting the plantations in Charles City County on Route 5 is a great idea. North Bend Plantation has a website, it is a bed and breakfast on a working farm in a home that dates from the 1819. www.northbend.com
