View of Empire State Building from street
A couple of years ago, when I was in NYC, we got off the subway from Grand Central Station after going the opposite way as we intended (we were going to Central Park). If I had to guess, it was at 34th St - Herald Square. We got a great view of the ESB from the ground from there (had just walked out of the subway station) and would like to get it again. In my picture, the only readible words on a building are Commodore Obiterion - cannot find online. I set this pic as my profile pics. Any help?
Alternatively, where can you get a great view from groundlevel of the ESB near a subway station?

Shh don't tell anyone. You can get a great view from 22nd and 5th in the pedestrian space or you can get this iconic view

by walking in the middle of 5th near the Museum of Sex or by riding an OPEN HoHo bus and knowing when to turn around and look up. Good luck!

You can also get a pretty good view near the subway station at 33rd/Park (the 6 train). Park Avenue is a good venue for picture-taking because it's so wide, but you can walk down 34th toward 5th Avenue and have several opportunities for pictures before the streets get really crowded after Madison.

Your picture (which looks to be more than "a few" years ago because that looks to me like one of the towers of the WTC in the background) looks to be taken from somewhere between 37-42 st and Broadway looking south. You can get a good but different view on Fifth ave & ~ 44 st.

I am positive that the profile picture is taken from the base of the Flatiron Building at 23rd St and Fifth Avenue looking north, on the Fifth Avenue side of the flatiron point. The glass windows at right are that art space in the storefront. You can see the trees of Madison Square on the right and the giant Toy Center building on the left.
The 23rd Street station of the Broadway line (N or R) is right at this corner.

By using Google Earth it was definitely 22nd and 5th that we took the pic. Thanks for the great pic. We have our itinerary for tomorrow planned. If all goes well, it will sound like Mr Toads Wild Ride through Manhattan. Ill post a trip report sometimr this weekend after a wedding on Saturday if we make it that far (bride and groom going with us tomorrow).
