Vegas to Grand Canyon by car in a day

We only have 3 days in Vegas and are thinking of going from south point hotel to the Grand Canyon. Planning on leaving early in the morning. Read that south ridge is where we should go. Any suggestions on where to stop and what to see? We figure we will get abt 4 hours at the Canyon and still get back at a decent time

What month? How many are the we? Do you feel that you have to return to Las Vegas after driving all the way to the south rim of the Grand Canyon?
If you can't get lodging at the south rim, just drive back to Williams or maybe to Hoover Dam Lodge. Be sure to see Hoover dam either going to or coming back from the Grand Canyon.

If you leave at 6am, that should get you to the south rim by about 11am. If you're planning on 4 hours at the GC that means you have until 3pm. With that amount of time here's what I'd do.

Take the shuttle bus to various lookout points. They are all good, and walk along the rim trail for a while.

You don't want to burn a large part of your 4 hrs there waiting for food, so bring a picnic lunch.

Spend time in GC village seeing the historic buildings.

Go to the the GC park visitor center.

I don't think you have budgeted any time to hike below the rim, but if you can manage more time, say 1 more hour, a short 20min hike down, (=40min back up) will get you a different perspective. You could use either the Bright Angel or S. Kaibab trails.

Then leaving GC @ 3 would get you back to your hotel by 8, or later if you stopped for dinner along the way.

I totally agree with J62, and if you could get a room for the night there, take it. The best time in GC is early morning before the day trippers (like you) get there and late day/sunset after they have gone.

Rather than taking the shuttle the whole way, walk along the rim trail from Bright Angel area for a way and when you get to a bus stop, hop on for a bit then continue the hop on/hop off to Hermit's rest.

You should of course stay for sunset! Williams is only about 1.5 hrs from the rim itself (it takes a while to park and walk to the edge). So if you can't get room at Maswik or Yavapai you could stay there. If you get up early the next morning you can be back to LV before noon.

Personally, I don't get the fascination with Hoover Dam. The only place I'd stop is for about 20 minutes in Seligman where Rt 66 comes in. Visit Delgadillo's Sno Cap.

Sunset is prettier to me than sunrise, and Williams has lots of neon and better food than inside the Park (actually I'd recommend bringing your dinner, the food and service are abominable) so if you can only spare time for sunset then I'd return to Williams that night to get a head start the next day.
