Even the walking distances to get to your rooms from the fromnt entrance can take 5-10minutes. I had a quick look at www.luxor.com and they were offering $89 per room midweek at the end of September.
There is a Motel 6 on tropicana road which is a short distance from the strip.
The Flamingo is a good hotel with a very good pool area, good buffet and generally reaonably priced. It is mid strip beside Bally's , Paris, Casears Palace and across the road from Bellagio and close to Mirage,TI and the Venetian. The distances eeded to walk to your room if you get a strip facing room are shorter than at many hotels/casinos.
I stayed at the Doubletree Club Las Vegas Airport for $55 per night and offered hourly complimentary transportation to the Mandalay Bay ( very nice but a bit of a hike to the mid strip action).
I would probably choose the Flamingo if the prices are available.

Check out Bally's, Flamingo, and Paris (Paris would be most expensive of the 3). Also, Barbary Coast should fit your needs, but that don't have a pool, so cross that one off the list if a pool is important to you. I'd sooner recommend the first 3, but Barbary Coast should be fine if it's the only one in your price range. Location of all 4 is EXCELLENT, dead center of the strip.

Where ever you end up staying, i'd recommend walking to Paris for buffet brunch, as it's known to be one of the best brunches in Vegas.

Also, no matter where you stay, you can take the monorail from Bally's (walking distance from any of the above) to the MGM. This will get you to the south end of the strip without too much walking, as well as give you a break while on the monorail.

Garry is right, you really have to walk every where - the distance from registration to your room is astounding. The walk TO the monorail is about the same distance and lenght of time from MGM to Bally via the regular old sidewalk.

For cheap accomodations, try Palace Station - it's about a ten minute free shuttle ride to the strip - pretty cheap and comfortable. The buffet there is pretty good, but try Harrah's for an excellent buffet breakfast (I'd been going to Vegas for 15 years before I tried their buffet and was really surprised by how good it was).

If you can, you might want to get your sister a wheelchair and push her around - that would probably be the best way to get around on the street, and not all that unusual either. If you can rent an electric chair, all the better. Remember, everything in the world is in Vegas and the hotel concierge should help with those wheelchair arrangements. If not, try the Vistors' Bureau.

Try the Amerisuites on Paradise or The Hawthorne Suites on Duke Ellington.
Both have free breakfast and they are nice, to boot.
The La Quinta on Paradise is ok...
Depending on the dates, you may be able to get a great deal on the MGM one of the other big hotels.
You can get b'fast for 1.99 or 2.99 many places so don't let that keep from a big hotel.

Your sister will need an electric wheelchair if she can't walk more than a block.
It's a block walk just into and out of many of the hotels.

ditto on above remarks. unless you can arrange a wheelchair or electric chair vegas will not be very enjoyable. it's the one place i visit where my feet are usually sore at night from the amount of walking we do.
$80/night you should focus on a mid week trip and figure out a time when there isn't a big convention in town. it could be VERY hot in september and i would make sure to stay at a place with a pool so you can cool off. flamingo is probably within your price range. if you can get a deal, try bally's too. there is a good super 8 off the strip (behind bally's) about a 5 minute walk but unless you get that electric chair i wouldn't consider it.

I agree with checking the Flamingo. We paid $45/nt in Feb. The breakfast buffet was around $20 for two. The location is great.

For the least amount of walking to your room from the casino and restaurants, I'd recommend the Barbary Coast. It is small and easy to navigate. It is older, smaller but the rooms are very clean and quite large. It is a good central location as well. Good Luck. Maggie

Go to the Imperial Palace website...www.imperialpalace.com and click on the room specials. 55 dollars a night for a double room with 2 free breakfasts. It's a good "center strip" location to minimize your walking. Take the strip bus to get to the further hotels.

Flamingo is one of the easiest hotels to get in and out of, though Vegas is definitely a "walking" vacation.

At the Flamingo you can ask for a room close to the elevator that goes to the buffet. This will make breakfast a lot easier. The buffet has a nice view of the outdoor gardens which is nice if you're unable to walk around out there much.

The Flamingo is a nice choice. And don't miss the chance to stroll through the Flamingo garden and pool area. It is beautiful and a very nice respite from the hustle and bustle of the strip. Take your time moving around, be patient and enjoy your Vegas stay!

It seems to me that I once heard of an agency which specialized in handicapped visitors. Does anyone have any info?

Janda - definitely get the electric chair. It's so expansive...vast...huge...

Also, although not necessarily "low key" - Treasure Island has fantastic handicap rooms. I've stayed in one before and they were very spacious. And the rates might be a little more, but I think they're worth it.

I would certainly chose the Barbara Coast or the Flamingo (next door to each other). I think the Imperial Palace is a lousy property and this would be a last resort (literally). Sandy
