Vancouver to Langley, Washington

We're planning to fly to Vancouver in early August, then travel to Langley, Washington, before ending up in Seattle. Since Langley is well north of Seattle and although we had planned to fly from Vancouver to Seattle, we're wondering if there's a better way to go. The air option includes early arrival at Vancouver, then car rental and a drive from Seattle airport (which is south of the city) up north to Langley. Wouldn't a car rental in Vancouver and drive straight to Langley be more efficient. I realize that there would be time spent at the border plus a dropoff charge. But even so, doesn't this make more sense? Or is there another option that's more worthwhile?

If you plan is to go Vancouver, to Langley, and then to Seattle it would be best to rent a car in Vancouver. From Vancouver you will drive on I-5 and then on Highway 20 West over Deception Pass to Langley, which is on Whidbey Island. In this routing you could include scenic and historic Chuckanut Drive and the towns of La Conner and Coupeville.

I should have added that from Langley you will take the ferry from Clinton to Mukilteo and drive into Seattle on I-5.

Sounds interesting, but as I gather information it appears as if the car rental would cost about $650 and the drive to Langley would take three hours plus however long it takes at the border. That seems quite expensive, especially when the airfare for two is less than half that and the flight takes less than an hour. Also, we are told that the drive from Seattle to Langley is an hour an a half. If we rent from Seattle, wouldn't we be able to take scenic drives from Langley?

I agree with what HTTY wrote, but then with the additional information I think I would opt for the flight to Seattle. If you do that, drive north on I-5 over to 20 like HTTY said, and then you can still take in Deception Pass which is very scenic. You would miss the Chuckanut Drive unless you wanted to add that in, but if you have time then I would do it.

I agree, but it is the correct answer to your question.

To visit Seattle, Langley, and Vancouver for much less, fly into Seattle and rent a car for the Langley portion of the trip.

If you are in Langley for a few days, you could visit the places I mentioned in my earlier post and you might also take the ferry to Port Townsend for a day trip (ferry reservations recommended).

You could return to Seattle, turn in the rental car, and Travel to Vancouver on the train.
