I will be traveling to a conference in Whistler at the end of Jul-beg of Aug. on the way back from Vancouver I would like to travel solo to Alaska for few days. (since I am already there)
any suggestion, are there reasonable short cruises with smaller ships and which one are best to do ?
would it be wise to start in Vancouver and fly home (NY) from another city ?
and are cruises the only way from Vancouver ?
Thanks for all your responses.

There are very few nonstop flights from Vancouver to Alaska (like, one a day, and expensive.) On the other hand, there are umpteen from Seattle, so you'd find it much cheaper simply to drive (or train, quite scenic) down to Seattle and fly from there.
There are also many one-way cruises to Alaska from Vancouver; however they all take 7 days, and if you're traveling alone you'll find it quite expensive, as the cruise lines want to sell whole cabins (for 2.)
You could take the Alaska ferry from Bellingham WA (a little south of the border) to Juneau or some other town in SE Alaska - around 72 hours from Bellingham to Juneau for example. Very scenic through the Inside Passage, but you'd only be able to see a few places in SE Alaska, and not Anchorage, Denali, etc. in that time frame, unless you wanted to get off the ferry and fly the rest of the way.
You might look into an open-jaw itinerary, NYC - Vancouver, then a one-way flight from Seattle to Anchorage, then the "return" portion of the open-jaw from ANC to NYC.

That gave me a chuckle. As many times as we've been to Vancouver and NW Washington state, we had not been to Alaska. Then we decided to take a one-way southbound cruise to Vancouver (coming from Florida). As we flew over Seattle enroute to Anchorage, I too thought to myself "well, almost there." It was another 3 hours before we were there.
It was surprising to get that lesson in just how far away Alaska is - I really should have realized. Don't mean to discourage you, but keep that in mind and allow yourself time. Otherwise, Vancouver is an awesome place to spend a few days. Or you might consider exploring the Sunshine Coast in a circle (up along the coast from Vancouver to Lund, then over to Vancouver Island and back down to Victoria).
BC Ferries has some good suggestions: http://www.bcferriesvacations.com/activities/
Finally, you could take a round-trip cruise out of Seattle, if you can spare a week.
