Vail activity ideas
Our family (mom, dad, son 16 and daughters 12 and 11) will be vacationing in Vail the first week of August. We have tickets to do a zipline and have had one contact with Vail Valley Paragliding to do paragliding one morning, but I have not had a reply to the email I sent at their request with info regarding times, etc.
Our kids found summer dogsledding online and I made a call which has not been returned. Our youngest doesn't weigh enough to rent a Segway, and whitewater rafting is out of season. My husband and I like hiking but the kids don't.
I feel like I'm hitting a brick wall. Any ideas? Help!

Well, renting bikes is an idea. One can either ride up/down the mountain trails or use the bike path that runs up east to Vail Pass and over to Copper MT. It even goes as far as Breckenridge/Keystone. Or you can ride the flatter section west to Edwards.
I seriously doubt that rafting will be out of season the first week in August. How about fishing? Take the Gondola up for the afternoon.
Go to the Vail website (activities) and you'll likely find more than you can manage in a week.

Here's the website for Vail www.vail.com/summer/activities
For rafting (yes, it's possible) www.novaguides.com
Timberline also does rafting trips but I don't have their website. Google.

Whitewater rafting is still going strong. Rivers are still high and fast. Rivers I should be able to get into and fish by now are still too dangerous to wade. Whitewater rafting will probably be good into the middle of August. Check out outfitters rafting the Eagle River, and the Colorado River through Glenwood Canyon.

I don't recall the name of the company but you can horseback ride in Vail. Also, there is a ranch nearby that may interest your younger travelers. We were all adults and had a very enjoyable time and would go back for the scenery alone.

We always take the chair lift to the top and hike down. Our kids always loved doing it, from pre-school ages on, and your kids may find it is different than hiking in the deep woods since it is basically open and sunny.
You can go ice skating outdoors in the evening at Beaver Creek which is affiliated with Vail.We never ran out of things to do in the Rockies with our kids especially at Vail.

the thing about Vail is it is expensive there but go on down the interstate 10 or so miles to Avon .. there is where the locals go to the Super Walmart and such .. have a fun time there .. ride the gondola up the mountain top is fun as well .. bus system is real easy to use and runs on time
