We are looking to vacation with our two children (9 & 4 1/2) in July in KY. We've researched a bit into Rough River Lake, Wood Creek, Barkley Lake (?)....what we'd like is a cabin/cottage on the waterfront where we can jump into the water, near hiking and other outdoor activites, fishing and more...any thoughts? Anyone been to these places and is there a lot to do for families?

I grew up near Rough River and played in it when it was called a creek. (This was before the dam was built that created the lake.) It is a quite pleasant getaway, but there is not a lot to do other than water sports and hiking. The lodge serves pretty good meals, as do all the KY state parks.
Have you checked on Cumberland Falls? It is nice and near the mountains and Berea which is an interesting town.
I looked into Cumberland Lake but I'll take another look into the Falls and the area around as you suggested. Thanks for the tip!
CF is also near Corbin where you can see the original Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant. Woohoo!
