Vacation House - Charlottlesville VA

Group of us looking to rent a house/cabin for a week next sping in or near Charlottesville VA. Need room for 8 (4 couples). Prefer 4 separate bedrooms rather than "bunk room" or pull-out sofa in living room type of set up. Minimum of 2 full baths. Plan to spend some time in-town as well as surrounding area for touring/hiking. So aything from "downtown, walk to restaurants" to a "secluded cabin in the woods" could work for us. Any info/suggestions greatly appreciated.

Hope others have info for you on vacation rentals in C-ville. The town's great but I don't really see vacation rental"houses --it'd be like picking a suburb and renting a house. If you want to find something like that IN C-ville, I would check craigslist (there's a C-ville section now).

There are, however, plenty of other surrounding places that will have this type of rental and it looks like you are flexible. The first place that comes to mind is Wintergreen Resort http://tinyurl.com/zbhtc .

Otherwise, you can start checking into the places listed here:http://tinyurl.com/hofuy

Good luck. I can answer questions about surrounding areas, things to do but haven't actually rented a place here.

schlegal1 - thanks for suggestions. I'll check out sites you provided. Info about what to do also appreciated. Group's interests are mixed so many things likely to appeal. For sure - antiques, hiking (nothing too ardous, nice walk in the woods type of dayhike), local art/craft galleries, good restaurants (Mexican, homecooking, Italian always work). I know there's several historic sites. I assume Monticello is an obvious one. Any others not to be missed? Thanks again.

outwest - Where are you from? Do you have much familiarity with Virginia? Why did you choose Charlottesville?

MOnticello is great. People also like to visit Ash Lawn, home of James Monroe. The University of Va is also gorgeous and worth touring.

There's lovely and unique shopping on the downtown pedestrian mall. That's also a great place to find a variety of restaurants.

You'll see plenty of places to stop for antiquing but I don't know a specific place to rec..

For outdoor activities it depends on whether you want to leave the Charlottesville area (though there are some light hikes right there, too). The prettiest places will be towards the mountains. For example, we love to drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway (get on in Waynesboro, 1/2 hr. west of C-ville) and hike the trails. If you want to venture over to Staunton, there's the Frontier Culture Museum, Shenandoah Shakespeare theatre (great performances!), Wilson Presidential Library.

If you go even further west, you can get into Civil War battlefields, etc.

Charlottesville is also fairly close (1 hour) to Richmond, and (2 hours) to Williamsburg if you are going to be touring the general area of Va.

It would help to know a few more specifics about your plan if you are at that stage yet. Happy planning!

schlegal1 - your suggestions very helpful. Most of us from Annapolis area. Couple coming up from NC. Chose C-ville largely as a somewhat intermediate point to get together that we assumed would have some diversions. Driving out of C-ville to is fine; something like a couple hours out to reach a daytrip destination is no problem. We probably wouldn't go as far as Richmond of Williamsburg. Main objective of the week is to spend time with friends with activites being icing on the cake.

Hi there,
The best place to go for a nice rental for a group is http://va-guesthouses.com/
My guests love their accommodations!

Best,

Erika, I must say that your website looks great, and the places are very appealing. My husband and I did a VA vacation in 1985 or so and we stayed in B&B's. I'm pretty sure that we used Guesthouses for accomodations in Charlottesville, and also for a small cottage on a farm along the James River. Very nice!

Thanks for the compliment!

We like Guesthouses for groups as the prices of accommodations are getting up there. All the B&Bs really in this area are very very nice, and you can see most all of them at once on the Assn website - bbav.org

We are working on buidling a wine country themed B&B.

Best,

Erika

Seriously consider Skyline Drive in the Shenandoah Natl. Park.. The fixed-wall cabins at Lewis Mt. might meet your requirements
