VA Bch vs Rehoboth Bch

Thanks everyone for the great advice, I am considering between Virginia Beach (as it may be a bit warmer in Sept) and Rehoboth (which sounds like a very interesting place too). Can someone compare the 2 in terms of beach quality/ocean conditions/accomodations/weather in September/overall vacation value? Can anyone suggest a reasonably-priced place to stay with 2 bedrooms and kitchen, beachfront or close to it? Thanks alot!!!

I am partial to Rehoboth. There are not many "big hotels" as there are in VA beach. There are several beaches with their own flair within a short drive of Rehoboth such as Dewey and Bethany. We have a house in Bethany and love the DE shore. Temps and prices are going to be about the same for both in Sept. The prices go way down, so you will get alot of bang for your buck. Start looking on VRBO.com and Homeaway.com. Just be sure to ask about their place being ocean block. Rehoboth has many cottage type houses for rent. I'd go that route first vs a hotel.

You may find more rental possibilities around Virgina Beach than the Rehoboth/Dewey/Fenwick Island area.

Rehoboth itself is much smaller than Virginia Beach and the boardwalk is shorter; the town itself looks a lot more "picturesque" than Virginia Beach (and I like both places but for different reasons).

Delaware has no sales tax so there are a lot of folks who throng to those outlet stores in town.

I remember when Bethany was, literally, a crossroads and not much else.

I think overall you may find the Rehoboth area a bit more laid back than Va. Beach.

Now....if you just don't have a hurricane and Rehoboth doesn't have one if its (it never happens here) jellyfish or sea nettle "problems"....

Rehoboth is a nicer, much more quaint resort than Virginia Beach. Many people do not realize that Virginia Beach, due to suburban sprawl, is Virginia's largest city. Much of the city of Virginia Beach is rather ugly and cramped.

Ocean temperatures should still be in the seventies in September at both beaches. The variance between the two should not be large.

Dukey, what do you mean about jellyfish or sea nettle "problems"???

Can anyone suggest a particular rental property in Rehoboth?

I have been to both, but I haven't been to Rehoboth for several years. Va Beach is more built up like the others have said. Rehoboth is more small town with a very small boardwalk. VA beach has a long boardwalk with more stuff to do. The Va Beach's boardwalk runs between the hotels and the beach.
I found Rehoboth towel to towel. It was very crowded and I did not like that. Sept will be less crowded of course. Va beach is a much larger beach. Personally, I like the beach better in Va beach, but Rehoboth is still more of a small town feel.
Va Beach has an area called Sandbridge which has condos that rent and it is a much quieter area about 20 min south of va beach.
In Va beach, the nicer hotels are the Hilton, two courtyard Marriotts (I like the north better, and we just recently stayed at the Holiday inn sunspree oceanfront north (I think they have efficiencies). I know there are many other accomodations available.

Virginia Beach is and has been Virginia's largest city due to the actual amount of land that is in the city, not how many people live there. There is actually a lot of farmland. If you choose VB I would pick someplace in Sandbridge (mentioned earlier) or the North End.There are many fabulous restaurants too.

Sandy, I think I mentioned this in your other thread.

The water temps and the weather will be pretty much the same. Rehoboth and Virginia Beach are only approx 3 hours away from each other. The water temp will still be warm (mid 70's).

The water quality is about the same. Virginia Beach (the beach itself) is actually wider/bigger and the water most days is pretty calm, moreso than what I've seen in Rehoboth. I also noticed a drop off in the water at Rehoboth when I was there last September.

The accommodations vary greatly between the two locations and this is where I prefer Virginia Beach. The hotels on Rehoboth are locally owned and more expensive, particularly the ones right on the boardwalk. There are a couple that offer 2 bedrooms and/or kitchenettes. The Atlantic Sands offers a vacation suite which may suit your needs and it looks like their posted rates for September are $225.00. You may also consider a condo. We last stayed at One Virginia Avenue Condominiums, which is located right on the beach/boardwalk. We researched accommodations quite extensively before we made our decision. It seemed to be the best option for a 2 bedroom with kitchen located on the beach. The majority of the hotels (particularly ones that might have what you are looking for) are on Route 1 which is the main road going into Rehoboth. You would have to drive a couple of miles to actually get to the beach and boardwalk area.

Check this website as it lists all of the accommodations (hotels/condos, etc.) and would be your best place to start. http://www.rehoboth.com/stay.asp

You have more of a variety of hotels on Virginia Beach as well as price ranges. A couple of places you might be interested in which I’ve heard great things about (haven’t had to stay in any of them since I live here), are the Ocean Club Resort, the Turtle Cay Resort and Barclay Towers. This website lists accommodations in Virginia Beach. http://www.vbhma.com

Virginia Beach is more crowded and there is more traffic than Rehoboth. Rehoboth has a traditional boardwalk and is very quaint. Is very quiet, laid back and more relaxing. Virginia Beach has a lot more options of things to do, both at the beach and the surrounding area. Both are family friendly.

BTW, I have photos of both places. I'm traveling now, so I'm not sure when I can get them posted, but hopefully will be within the next couple of days.

rehoboth will periodically have an influx of jellyfish and sometimes sea nettles.

It probably has as much to do with the current flows and perhaps time of year as anything else.

Rehoboth is fine and I wouldn't NOT go there fearing that might happen but to act as some in Rehoboth do that it NEVER happens would be doing you a disservice.

As I said earlier, I like both locations for different reasons.

There may be some things which are closed down in both places because the 'season" basically ends on labor Day.

Rehoboth is smaller and quieter than Va beach with fewer dining and shopping options. But the quality of the shopping and dining in Rehoboth has GREATLY improved over the past 10-15 years.

For some this is a no-brainer choice and for others harder.

I think I'm leaning towards Virginia Beach, now I'd like to narrow down the area. How would you compare the south/central/north beaches?

BTW Chasechow, where could I find out about One Virginia Avenue Condominiums, where you stayed? I would love to see your pics when you get them posted!

Thanks everyone for all the great advice, it really helps!!

I think the North end of Va beach is the best area to stay. It has the nicer hotels and less commercial shops. The central part of Atlantic Ave is the most congested and has the most stuff. The South end is fairly quiet. There is a great, but pricey italian restaurant in the South end called IL Giardano's.
You can take the trolley up and down Atlantic Ave for a dollar a ride. I believe it runs up and down till 2am. It has it's own lane so it does not sit in any traffic. I would check and see if it is still running all the time in Sept.
Sept will be quieter in Va Beach but still great weather. Enjoy!

Oh a friend is staying at the time share called Ocean beach resorts next week. It is in the north end. I will report back whether it was good or not. It does have construction going on one side of the building.

Thanks girlonthego, I would be interested in hearing about that place, also any others you know of that would be good for a family with small children (2 bdrs/full kitchen/on the beach or close to it!) I appreciate your help.

Virginia Beach really doesn't end the season on Labor. It's extended through September with lots of activities (it's when locals enjoy the beach)
Look at www.neptunefestival.com for activities and dates.

Sandy - If you want info about One Virginia Avenue Condos, go to the Rehoboth.com website that I provided above and then click on "condominiums" You will see the listing for One Virginia Avenue Condominiums and you can click on their name to access their website.

Girlonthego is absolutely correct about the breakdown of the beach area and she's definitely right about IL Giardino 's.

Judy is right about things not shutting down immediately after labor day. Not sure if you will be here during the Neptune Festival or not (Judy provided you the link for info regarding this), but it is really great. There's a boardwalk art show, live music all weekend long and an awesome sandsculpting contest where contestants come from all around the world to compete. I will also post some of the photos that I took from last years. When I've posted my pics, I'll post a link here so that you can access them.

Have not been to Va Beach, but been to Bethany and Rehobeth. I like them both very much. In september, you should be able to rent a house in either. Should be warm and quiet. I'd pick Rehobeth. Great restaurants, nice town.

I'm a Virginia Beach local so thought I would kick in my two cents. The Neptune Festival is our "locals take back the beach" festival, so it's alot of fun. Not many old guys with black knee socks walking around. That's at the beginning of September every year. Sandbridge is the locals beach but there are only houses to rent there and if you want to do anything (like go out to eat or see a movie), you are going to have a hike on your hands. The strip is great and during September, not very crowded. There is also a water park, the Virginia Aquarium, Motor World and a huge putt-putt place about a mile from the oceanfront.
