Upstate NY hotel. Gideon Putnam or The Desmond?

I'll be in the Albany area this weekend I can stay at the Gideon Putnam in Saratoga Springs or the Desmond in Albany for about the same $$$ I'm aware of their locations and either one is fine. Anyone familiar with either or both hotels?

I can't believe you asked this question. We were in Albany three weeks ago and wanted to stay at the Desmond and it had a convention going on, so we stayed at the Hotel across the street. The Desmond at once was a great hotel. The doormen dress like Ben Franklin etc. The rooms were great. My husband had a meeting at the Desmond and said that is was pretty run down. Its not the same Desmond as he remembered. The hotel accross the street wasn't any better.

Living in upstate NY (by the way with think Albany is down state, who cares - right -) We love Saratoga Springs. Albany is a big city with nothing to do,but Saratoga is a beautiful quaint town, with small Bistro's and great boutiques. You can also park a car in Saratoga. In Albany if you have business downtown, you better take a shuttle. Vote - Saratoga 100%

I agree with Carol: stay in Saratoga. The Gideon Putnam is located in a beautiful state park which would be great for taking a walk. Plus they have a wonderful Sunday brunch. I have never seen the guest rooms but the public rooms are very pretty. In comparison, the Desmond is across from the airport and you cannot walk to anything. The main restaurant, the Scrimshaw has very good food but I think you are better off at the Gideon Putnam. Crystal Spring Spa is nearby if you are interestd in massages, etc.

Dan, I was just thinking about the view you would have at the Desmond and that would be either a parking lot or Wolff Rd. Go the extra few miles to Saratoga Springs.

Well that was quick. Gideon Putnam it is. And I'll be saving $10 too. $99 vs $89. Thanks Carol and Liz!

Gideon Putnam for sure! Albany is so-so as far as cities go. Nothing special. Saratoga is quaint, lovely.

Dan, we aim to please - ask and you shall receive. It was so ironic that this question came up, because I got my master card bill today and the only store to shop at was the Christmas Store and my husband said, the next time when we go to Albany, we will stay in Saratoga so you won't be so bored while I'm in my meetings.

Wow- you saved money to boot!!!!!! Yeah
