We are thinking of going to Oahu in November and are familiar with the location of the W, (which we like), but haven't stayed there yet.
The fact that it doesn't have a pool won't be an issue for us. I haven't found too many reports from people who've stayed at the W on this forum, so if anyone has something to share, please feel free. Any room type or location vastly better than another? If it matters, we usually stay at the Kahala Mandarin (nice!) or the New Otani.
Thanks,
Jane

I did a rant & rave on the W a while ago. I did not like this hotel. I also usually stay at the Mandarin Oriental, but thought I'd give the W a try since it's so highly rated on the Mainland. The W was inferior to the Mandarin Oriental in every way -- rooms, service, ambiance, decor, location (it's a bit of a hike to anything), views, etc. We got an "ocean view" room, but found that we also had a view of a bunch of unattractive concrete buildings between us and the ocean. The hotel isn't beach front. There's only one elevator servicing the guest floors, often resulting in long waits. The staff at the front desk was pretty unhelpful. Don't even try asking for any Gold Starwood Preferred Guest favors -- I was told that Starwood rules don't apply to this hotel since it's so small. We were really disappointed in the W Honolulu and will not stay there again. The one good thing about our room was the amazing view of Diamond Head. That's about it, though.
