We have only been once in 2013 so take this with a grain of salt. We spent one day at Universal (6 days at WDW) and we spent the entire day at Islands of Adventure. Our kids were 10 and 7 at the time and thet LOVED it. We enjoyed a quick lunch at Confisco Grille and had open table rservations at Mythos for dinner (had to go at 4:00 but it was worth it; very cool/unique restaurant).

Go to Islands of Adventure the afternoon you arrive.
The next day to go Universal
Day 3, decide for yourselves how you want to split your time.

You can go back and forth between the two parks so you don't have to pick just one for a certain day.
If you are a Harry Potter fan take the Hogwarts Express between to go between the parks.

If you are an adult, then Universal Studios. If you have teens or kids, Islands of Adventure.

Seconding what schmerl said! It's easy tool back and forth if you have the park to park.

I disagree with Doug. I am an adult and then some and I LOVE Islands of Adventure.
As I said before....just go back and forth between the parks. No need to spend an entire day in just one.
