Can you call your boss at home or on the cell? Someone must have his/her numbers for emergency's.

When did you book for? Are you owed vacation days?
If the date is out there in the future it would seem reasonable if you are customarily able to book any time slot you want to go ahead and book. If is next week, well I would say forget it. In my line of work, I would go ahead and book it. I am owed vacation and my industry really does not have a busy season - ie April for accountants....

good Luck.

I'm pretty sure United allows you to change the dates on award travel so long as the routing remains the same, but try posting your question in the United Forum on flyertalk.com. They are the true experts on United (sometimes even more than United's own agents, lol).

You know your boss and you know your job. None of us do. This is a tough call for anyone but you. What do YOU think the boss will say?
Good luck. Sounds like too good an opportunity to pass up.

I've heard that it's better to ask for forgiveness than for permission

Use your independent thinking skills to go ahead and schedule your trip, then work to make sure your duties are covered in the office while you're gone. When the boss returns, explain your dilemma then carefully outline all the positive actions you took to make things run smoothly while you're away. A slam dunk.

Besides how can he say no to your travel plans the day he returns from his African safari?

If push comes to shove you can redeposit the mileage and start over. Or as someone said, change it.
