Two mini-trips to Denali? (or, 5 days in Alaska)

Jump to last reply

I'm looking to take an extended weekend trip to Alaska this August to get some temporary relief from North Carolina heat and humidity. For several reasons, I'm looking at flying into and out of Fairbanks and renting a car to head south from there to Anchorage (don't ask why I'm flying into FAI and then driving 350 miles to Anchorage ;-) ). Because hotels and the car are so expensive, I only have 5 days available.

Day 0: Fly from the East Coast to FAI, spend the night in Fairbanks
Day 1: Drive south to Anchorage
Day 2: Anchroage (generically -- just using Anchorage as a base)
Day 3: Anchorage (generically)
Day 4: Anchorage (generically)
Day 5: Drive back to Fairbanks and catch the 9:20 PM redeye.

I want to see Denali, but I recognize that I do not have the time or the logistics to dedicate a full day to it. I don't want to spend the night at Denali because I don't like a series of one-night stays in hotels, and also so that I can maximize the time I have in Anchorage to make it a good logistical base. One of those days will be spent doing as little as possible. Since I have to pass Denali twice on the trip, is it possible to do two mini-trips to Denali, one on the way up and one on the way back, about 4-6 hours each? If so, what can I do? The trip into Denali on Day 1 would allow more flexibility and could be longer than the the trip on Day 5. I've read the tourbook and unfortunately I'm more confused than before. :-(

All in all, I'm looking for ways to see Denali in 2 short mini-trips rather than one full day. I think I could take one of the buses on the trip down, but an 8-hour excursion is probably too long. I'm not opposed to some hiking, but it would need to be simple, easy stuff becuase I hopefully will have healed from my broken foot only about 3 weeks prior to the trip. (Yesterday, the doctor was pleased with my latest round of x-rays and cleared me to start wearing a shoe instead of a boot on a limited basis.) Maybe do Denali National Park on the way down and Denali State Park on the way back up?
