Turn on the news . . . they found a snow cave!

They found a snow cave and a Y carved in the snow. Coverage on CNN has been excellent and very interesting over the last half hour. Rescuers are on their way now.

I was watching the Saints game, too, Barbara.

I have been glued to the news since my son called about the breaking news.

Thanks for keeping us posted, BG!

It was a snow cave.

No one inside.

One sleeping bag, rope, and 2 ice axes inside. Some footprints in that area.

I hope all 3 are safe in a snow cave nearby. I pray they find them soon!

Sheriff's office just announced one man found dead on the mountain. Such bad news.

Sadly they just found a body. Since everyone here is a traveler, it is sad to hear that they all did everything right and it seems that tradgedy struck!

I don't think it's correct to say they did everything right. They made an unwise choice to climb a difficult route, in winter, in the face of a known approaching storm.

It's tragic. Too sad and right in the middle of the holidays.

Hate to say it, really, but I have to agree with Nora. First thing I said to DH when news broke that they were missing was "I would NEVER let you climb a mountain in the winter!" (Not that tragedies don't happen any time of year, but with the conditions in December up on a mtn., too dangerous to even think about it.)

As I posted on the lounge thread, I think they were training to climb the Himalayas. If so, then it would make sense to practice climbing in December.

I think there is a mentality out there of "extreme sports" that is "out to conquer nature" rather than enter wild places with careful planning, respect and reverance. No one deserves to die alone and frozen, but do rescue squads deserve to risk their lives in December?? Just my opinion. Sad for everyone involved.
