Trip to Niagara Falls and then to Maine

Need to know how much driving this is total ... we have several days and thought we would stay in each place a day or two. Would driving be the best way to sightsee and is there beauty in these places? If this is too much for 8 -9 day trip, then thinking of maybe driving thru NY but don't know what to do or where to go. Have always wanted to see the states of VT, RI, NH & especially Maine. Any suggestions are most welcome - as we have nver been up that far northeast.

I live in the northeast and have never been to Niagra Falls. If you only have 8-9 days, I would concentrate on VT, RI, NH and ME. Actually, it would be tough to narrow down what to see in each state. Also depends on time of year. I live in NH but about an hour from the coast which is a lot different from where I live. And the White Mountains are beautiful, too. We love VT because so much of it is still rural.

After a day or two in Niagara, its very easy to drive across New York to New England where you could loop through the other states for almost a full week... if you are not a driver, consider a guided tour via bus....

Niagara Falls is definitely an outlier to New England. It is much better paired with a trip to Toronto - only about an hour from the Falls - and you have to go to the Canadian side to see/do much anyway.

If I were you I would make a choice to either 1) see a couple of parts of New England - you cna;t cover it all in that time - or 2) do Niagara Falls and Toronto. (It's a pity to drive such a long distance and miss such a wonderful city.)

This really is TWO trips in one. Niagara Falls is the "Midwest" in the eyes of most East Coasters.

I would start with two nights in Niagara Falls, Canada and then get an early start and:

Drive to Vermont - stay 1-2 nights. This will be the one LONG driving day - 8-10 hours depending on stops for lunch, etc. but there is really nothing worth taking your very limited time for between Niagara Falls and the Northeast states.

Drive to New Hampshire - stay 1-2 nights

Drive to Maine - stay 4-6 nights depending on how long previous stops were.

(RI is too much of a detour for a 7-8 night trip that includes Niagara Falls, IMO)

Niagara Falls is way far west. I would not combine it with a New England trip. Even from Syracuse, its a good ways west. I would combine a trip to Niagara Falls with a trip to the Finger Lakes region of New York. It's really beautiful. For New England, its still New York but nearby, make sure you see the Adirondacks. As much as I love the White Mountains of New Hampshire, I like the Adirondacks even better, especially the Lake Placid area. I liked Vermont a lot ,very pasture like with rolling mountains. Of the New England states, Vermont and Maine are my favorite and IMO the highlights of New England. Maine has the coast and Acadia NP, which is not to be missed, but the real gem is if you go inland to Moosehead Lake and/or Baxter SP. That's really really pretty. Again, I really do like the White Mountains in NH , but this is another area I liked even better.
