Trip Report Trip report - Seattle,Vancouver,Victoria

Jump to last reply

I'm posting the Canada part on that forum.

My family just returned from 9 days in Seattle, Vancouver, and Victoria. Our group was me, DH, DD (age 24), and DS (age 20).

Friday:
We arrived in Seattle on Friday night after an uneventful non-stop flight on Delta from Detroit. We took the light rail from the airport which was very easy. However, be warned that it is a LONG walk from where you pick up your luggage to where you board the light rail. The cost is $2.50. Our Seattle hotel was the Westin, which we booked through hotels.com. The hotel was pretty much across the street from the light rail. Some of the reviews for the hotel weren't great but we were quite happy with it. The location was perfect and we got a high floor (37th floor in the north tower) as requested. The view was beautiful and we really liked the location. Others have mentioned issues with the elevators but I don't think we ever waited more than a minute for one. In the Westlake Center across the street was a food court with quite a good selection of items, so we stopped there for a quick dinner before taking the monorail to the Space Needle. We had hoped to go up around dusk but when we arrived we discovered that some company was giving away free tickets which resulted in a long line. It was nice to save on the high cost of the tickets but by the time we reached the top after nearly an hour wait, it was pretty much dark. We still enjoyed the beautiful city views.

Saturday:
We started the day with the Savor Seattle Pike Place Market Tour. This was a very enjoyable tour but I suggest avoiding going on a Saturday. The market was VERY crowded. Also, I have small ears and I had trouble keeping the earpiece on my ear. If you have ear buds you might want to bring them along to use instead. In the afternoon we went on the Argosy Cruises Seattle Lakes Tour. This was very pleasant and relaxing and the tour guide was very good.

Sunday:
We started out with the Pioneer Square Tour from the Frommer's Seattle Day by Day guide. Unfortunately the book didn't state that this tour should probably be done on a day other than Sunday. The area was pretty dead and some of the shops and restaurants weren't open. The Underground Tour was very entertaining and we also liked the Waterfall Park and the Gold Rush Museum. Lunch was challenging. The available options were mainly various Asian restaurants and I'm not fond of Asian food, or bars where my under 21 son wasn't welcome. This surprised us since in Michigan under 21s can eat in a bar with their parents. We ended up lunching at Jimmy John's. We then took a bus out to the Chittenden Locks. We had a nice time there. DH is always fascinated by locks and we all thought the fish ladder was pretty cool. The gardens were really pretty.

Tomorrow I'll continue the report on the Canada board.
