Trip Report from Maine and Boston

I will try to make this brief, as long trip reports can be boring.....

We left DTW for BGR. Arrived in Bangor with my DH, 1 year old, and in-laws. Picked up our rental car from Avis...rented a minivan. A bit of confusion with the rate and such, but decided to straighten it out when we returned.

Drove from Bangor to Bar Harbor. Nice ride, but lots of traffic. Right outside of Bar Hoarbor, stopped at the Trenton Lobster Pound. Had lobsters for lunch. $8.95 per pound. It was fun watching them cook them and all.

Arrived to the Harborside Hotel and Marina in Bar Harbor...Great hotel. Very nice, new and great location.

First night, had dinner at the West Street Cafe...nice place, not fancy, but good food. Then walked the main street. The town in really nice and quaint.

Day 2: Went on a Whale Watching Tour....or should I say the Barf Boat...We were all sick, execpt my son. In fact, 3/4 of the ship was sick. I would not recommend this. For it was very very expensive...$49 pp, and a waste for us as we all had our heads in barf bags...

Went back to the hotel to recouperate from that horribel experience and hung out at the pool.

Day 3: My DH and I went kayaking...what a great time...the scenery is beautiful. Totally worth it. We were on teh 1/2 day tour, 4 hours. Then we did a carriage ride in acadia natl park. that was really nice. We were cruched for time, so it was a nice way to view the park.

There were fireworks. The hotel did a great job of reserving all the seats for guests of the hotel. The display was wonderful...one of the best I have seen.

BOTTOM LINE: Bar Harbor was great and the hotel was wonderful.

Day 4eft for Kennebunkport

Arrived to the hotel, Nonantum resort about 5:00 to check in. To save time, let me say the hotel was HORRIBLE. You can read my posting on trip advisor..should be there in a few days. What an awful place. They put us above the dance floor for a mid-week wedding.

Ate dinner at Mabel's Lobster claw, which was just okay.

We were supposed to be in K'bunkport for 2 days, but we left the next morning...not without an adjustment of the bill, and such.

BOTTOM LINE: We did not like K'Bunkport or the NONANTUM RESORT.

Day 5: Drove to Boston via route 1 which was beautiful. Stopped in Gloucester for a look around...it was pouring rain. Arrived in Boston about 5:00 and checked into the Westin Copley Place hotel which was very nice.

Here is the summary of what we did. We were there 6 days. We did the basic tourist things...freedom trail, Boston Common, Boston Duck Tours, Durgin Park, Aquarium, Quincy Market, and Fanueil Hall, etc....

The highlight was the Boston Duck tour...I highly recommend this.

We ate at Turners Fisheries in the hotel twice. Once with my family, the second time we met our friend there for dinner. Also ate at Legal Seafood Copley Place. I recommend the both.

The westin was really nice. They even have heavenly cribs. Except my son climbed out. The hotel was very accommodating. They brought us up a wine and cheese plate, and for my son..a giant stuffed lobster.

It was a nice trip overall.

So what was your son's lobster stuffed with, crabmeat?

Thanks for your report. I agree, the Duck Tour is a terrific experience!

Sorry about your whale watching experience At least your little one was not sea sick -- that could be messy, lol!

Hi Tina,
thanks for reporting back. It's too bad the whale watch was so awful, because I remember you asking about it. Its a shame it turned out so badly for you. which company did you go out with? was the boat small? did they say the seas were unusually rough? and, although I realize you probably didn't notice, but were there any whales?

I'm also curious about the carriage ride, as I'm thinking of doing this on an upcoming trip. Was it expensive? did you call in advance, or just show up and get on?

Sounds like you had a good time in Boston, too. I love the duck tours! the drivers are very funny.

where else did you eat? I seem to recall there was a thread with a lot of dining suggestions, did you get to try any more place out?

thanks again for the trip report! glad you had (mostly!) a good time.

we went with Bar Harbor Whale Watching. Would you believe that the seas WERE NOT rough? It was a great day. I think that just happens to everyone. What a rip.

The carriage ride was with Wildwood Stables. It was $16 pp for a 1 hour tour. They have a web site, but I called and booked in advance. I cannot remember the website. Type in Wilwood Stables and Acadia National Park. It was very nice. I wanted to do the 2 hour, but with my son, 1 hour was plenty.

We ate at Union Oyster House, and Durgin Park. Inlaws ate at SkipJacks. I highly recommend Turners. The best Clam Chowder.

Hi Tina,

I'm glad to hear that your trip was, for the most part, a good one.

You have an unusual screen name and I remember your posts about Boston restaurants. It's too bad that you didn't have the chance to dine at some of the more local favorites that were recommended.

I also remember that you often topped your original post.

You posted your trip report today, and had thanks and feedback. Is there a reason that you have topped it so soon ?

Just curious.

that's ok, Marion, I do that for myself.
I think with a one year old she knew dining at some of the upscale restsurants, babies crying would not be appreciated but at Legal's (one of our favorites for the quality of oysters)
families are welcome. Legals chowder is superb. I get sea sick so I understand.
I'm happy you enjoted my city

I wasn't questioning her restaurant choices, I really am curious as to why she tops her posts....a lot.

I know what curiosity did to the cat, but I just couldn't help myself...

I have not given up on Kennebunkport entirely. Maybe I will go back some day.
